Just the time to think about this

Jun 20, 2006 08:23

So I slept for 15 hours last night. 5pm until 8am this morning. And I could have slept more but my alarm woke me up so that I could call in sick at work. That doesn't look dodgy at all... But I also called the doctors and I have an appointment for 10am for him to hopefully pull magical cures out of his ass (please not literally) so that I can feel ( Read more... )

*touches Rodney quite, quite happily* ;)

The bit that really interests me though is what I've lost. Because there are things that I've lost. Time mainly! But I've definitely had a great reduction in the amount I'm willing to stop being me in order to spend time with people I was friends with. To a great extent, a lot of my friends weren't into things the way that I was/am. They didn't talk about tv/films/books/etc and so I would not talk about it so I wouldn't bore them to tears. But now I have a smaller circle of friends, but they're better friends. Gradually I've lost touch with the people I was friends with who would just never get it.I just wanted to say... yes. Yes yes yes. You put that so exactly right. Both the time part (hee) and the greatly decreased desire to compromise oneself to be 'normal' in terms of a lot of things, it's just... freeing. And despite what people may say at times, I think it's a helluva lot healthier to have people you trust and love and who're close to you that you can obsess with than to have ( ... )

"I need to try and date outside of fandom"

Exactly - but at the same time you'd have to find other things to talk about with them and that is sadness. ;)

I can and will talk to people about other things though. Most of this weekend wasn't really all fandom-related discussions, but somehow it's that knowledge that there isn't anything that you can't talk about. That's the friends I have now, even if they aren't directly into fandom, you know?

Firstly, poor you. Being ill sucks! Especially when travel induced. *nods*

Also, to quote the exact same section as the previous person...
Gradually I've lost touch with the people I was friends with who would just never get it.
So true. I hardly speak to anyone I was at school with. I have friends now who aren't just my friends because of proximity, but because we share interests. I can have geek pride. I have also discovered that some of my "no geek" friends are hugely addicted to Stargate and actually do have more in common with me than I thought, thus saving and strengthening some friendships that otherwise might have fizzled out.

It's great when you find out that your no-geek friends are actually just as obsessive. In fact, they were probably hiding it for the same reason you were!
