“If you fall, you’ll die,” Seymour says, his mouth twisting into a smirk.  No doubt he’s looking forward to that time, now that he realises I only agreed to marry him so that I could send him.

“Don’t worry, I can fly,” I say unconcernedly.  Then I turn to my friends.  Kimahri, Wakka, Lulu, and Rikku; my family.  Sir Auron, my silent protector.  And Tidus… my hope.  Looking at him, I know he believes in me, that he will trust in me until the end.

“Believe,” I say to the others, who all look horrified that I’m about to jump off the tallest tower in Bevelle.  They all take a step forward as I lean backwards and let myself fall.

The air rushes past me, making it hard for me to move my arms.  My hair flies into my face, coming out of its elegant style that the maid insisted she do for me.  Although the wind stings my face and my hair is in my eyes, I’m glad for the sharp air for the simple reason that it keeps my dress where it’s supposed to be.

There’s no time like when you’re falling to your death to make your life flash before your eyes.  Memories of my parents that I’d forgotten flash through my mind; dreams and thoughts and wishes from when I was a little girl make me feel like a child again for a moment; and for a moment I think of letting myself fall all the way, so I can see my parents again.  Then I open my eyes and look up at my friends gathered around the edge of the tower where I fell, and all thoughts of leaving them disappear.

I reach my arms out and concentrate on Valefor, my first aeon.  He appears and flies beneath me, unfolding his wings just in time to catch me.  The sudden stop knocks my breath away, and I lie on his wings for a few moments before sitting up.  I’ve never been quite so close to him before, not close enough to look into his eyes and see the intelligence there.  He is an aeon - not a person, but not exactly a fayth either.  There’s human understanding behind his eyes, but also the essence of the fayth.

Aeons aren’t supposed to be a summoner’s friends.  They’re things that a summoner calls on to help in battle, a kind of holy servant.  But then summoners aren’t supposed to fall in love with their guardians, either… to borrow an expression from Tidus, I guess I’m totally screwed.
