I'm proud of you. It sounds like you are doing a lot and learning a lot. Losing a patient is always hard, I know(even if they are just dogs and cats). We fight for thier lives and do everything you described for our canine and feline patients. We lost a yellow lab today... someone fed him rat poison and all his internal organs hemorraged and he bled to death internally. It was very sad. I want to do ICU/Emergency with animals. I reallu like this aspect of medicine, even if it is the toughest.
