Your dad is great! Seriously though, everyone should have a first edition if only to read the rascally dwarf comment! I have a 1955 set and it wasn't that expensive at all.
Well, when Aragorn tells Legolas and Gimli that he's looked in the Palantir and Aragorn says 'you forget to whom you speak' to Gimli when he expresses surprise at that, the next line was originally, 'What do you fear that I should say: that I had a rascal of a rebel dwarf here that I would gladly exchange for a serviceable orc?' Snarky Aragorn or what! Tom Shippey says somewhere in one of his books that he would have preferred it if Tolkien had left that line in as it highlighted the often overlooked antagonism of Gimli towards Aragorn throughout the quest. I think Tolkien just decided it wasn't a very king-like comment and so removed it.
OMG, I've read about that! I never knew that got to the first edition, I thought it was tossed before! Hah, wow, Aragorn and his temper, hehe... not very diplomatic.
I'm trying to think about, and I honestly cannot think of any other accounts of Gimli being antagonistic to him.
