Why do I write fan fiction? Because I somehow feel a connection to the characters of the fandom I'm writing for. Sometimes I just get one idea, and if while I'm writing I feel comfortable with them, I'll often try to write more ( ... )

I'm not much of a writer but very much a reader, so take this with the requisite grain of salt. "Wish fulfillment" explains a lot of fanfics out there, from "I'd really like to see Character1 and Character2 to get together," to "I wish Characters were in (some setting familiar to the author)."

(If you have a better explanation for all those 'Characters in High School' stories, please share it. The "white florists" in Weiss Kreuz are ages 17, 19, 20, and 21, so you could get them into the classroom in pairs, possibly. But no way can you legitimately get the Rurouni Kenshin characters in high school: there's an eleven year age difference between Kenshin and Kaoru, the male and female leads. And yet there are so many "RK in HS" stories. *whimper*)

It got me to write some fanfic way, way back when an animated series I liked was both canceled and managed to skip over 15 years as well. (It showed a couple connecting, then jumped to when their son was 16 years old.) Others wrote about what happened after all the events shown in the series ( ... )

Oh god, I know what you mean about the HS fics. I've read one or two Saiyuki ones that aren't bad, they are just like the WK boys, fairly close in age so it kind of works, but still...

I really don't get the attraction of HS fics. Reading in general is an escape, so why would I want to read about school? Not to mention that I'm attracted to the anime, not just the characters, so I'd rather see them in a situation that is close to what they deal with normally. And I *don't* watch HS-based anime. I make the exception for good AU's (like Nekojita's 'Shadows' and Iapetus's 'Somewhere I Belong'), but most of the time I want to see them as they are. So the Weiss boys should be doing assassin kind of things. Besides, they are incredibly sexy in their mission clothes, so why get rid of the reason they wear them? XD!

But to each writer and reader their own, right? Some people seem to like it.

Arrgh, I edited too much out of my reply.

The times when I *had* to write a story where when I had an image appear in my head so strongly I wrote it to
1) get it out so I could think about something else;
2) explain it to myself if no one else (channel the characters via my fingers on the keyboard); or
3) share it with others.
Or some combination of the three. And for me it's easier to have the initial image pop into my head for that last class of series/fandoms; the ones with the strong characterizations and plot holes.

[Start opinion rant]: I see better fanfiction when it's for those series with the strong characterizations and plot holes. And usually (not all of the time) it's better fiction when the author sticks to the original series' milieu. Yeah, in other words I'm not a fan in general of AU's. There are some notable exceptions, like nekojita's Shadows and Cages. The latter is the only complete WK fic in which Aya is a prostitute that I find at all believable and even recommend with much gusto! (Marith started one, but I've ( ... )

There's two things that happen that make me write particular characters (and therefore fandoms). The best way that I can explain it is that on the one hand, I get a warm fuzzy feeling and the next thing I know I'm totally in love with the characters and want to play with them all the time. It's like getting a crush, or when you get exactly the toy you wanted as a kid ( ... )
