I am a technology imbecile

Okay, so I think my laptop is over-heating itself. I didn't even realise until the other day when my computer beeped and I clicked on something and it said CPU Temp: 90 degrees (fatal) - or something along those lines. What exactly is a CPU temperature, where should it be at and what can be done about making it less fucked up ( Read more... )

CPU temp is the temperature at which the bit inside your computer that does all the calculations and things is running at. Mine's currently running at about 40C, so yeah, yours is a bit overheated.

The main reason that laptop CPUs overheat is that people use them on their lap or a bed. The problem with this is that most of the air-holes for the ventilation on your laptop are on the bottom, so you're stopping the hot air getting out and cool air getting in. If you've been doing this STOP NOW, it's very rude and inconsiderate of you towards your laptop.

If using your laptop on a desk or other flat, hard surface, the laptops feet will keep it far enough off the surface that the air will be able to cycle, which makes everything just fine. If you have been doing this and still have problems, yes, it needs to go to the shop.

I haven't read a single one of the books you listed, I now feel very uncultured and literaturally impaired :-|

Okay, yes I may have been doing that :S Not for the past few days - but when you're watching movies on your laptop it's not so fun to sit at a desk.

It appears to be cooler than it was this morning - on like 57 at the moment. So I'll just check over the next few days and if nothing improves I guess I'll have to lug it up to university and get it checked out.

Seriously, two course books, two chick lit, one Russian classic and one top NZ author - from the girl who pre-internet would read five books a week.

Yeah, that's understandable. I watch movies at my desk because my PC has surround sound and my laptop is too old to be able to, so I know it gets kinda uncomfortable.

Turn your laptop over sometime and check that there's no dust or dirt clogging the air vents. If there is, you should be able to clean it yourself with some light brushing and that should cool things down a bunch.

I'm reading a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories at the moment. It's not hard to see how he's influenced so many other writers.

Thanks! I may go to the computer help desk and ask them where the nearest Asus dealer is. Possibly in like the USA.

I must read HP Lovecraft at some stage. I never have.

St Patrick's Day sounds good. What are pierogies?

Any plans yet for your birthday?

St Pat's was a lot of fun actually. Pierogies are like pastry/bread pockets filled with potato and cheese and stuff - they're Polish but I'm fairly sure the Polish make them better. I've just only had the frozen variety.

No plans as yet. If it's anything like Rose's birthday, it'll be good fun and I won't have to do any organising.

I want to enrol for next year, but you can't enrol til may. i have another 5pm lecture. so how many courses are you taking? i'll be doing 4, which will be nice!

i haevn't read many books this year. it makes me sad :( i reread the last two harry potters. and i need to reread the sisterhood of the travelling pants.

i didn't do anything for st patricks day. well, i wore a green sequin flower in my hair to work, but that was all.

I am friending people from work on myspace etc... it's slightly odd...

Oooh, present!

Enrol for next year?? I was just changing all my courses for next semester, I'm taking four. Three English, which is probably not so wise but never mind.

I miss Harry Potter, I didn't bring it with me.

:O Good luck with the myspace thing.

Yeah, sure. Enrol now!! Or can you not until may?? I changed my courses, but that's different perhaps.

No, I didn't. And I haven't joined the library - I may in the next week or so though because I am running out of reading material. Only one new book left!

Manky_Lank beat me to it, I was gonna say basically everything he said. The one thing he didn't say, Cazzicles said, something that's solid, flat, and slightly longer and wider than your laptop can be placed under it whilst it's in your lap.

One thing I can say, is that despite their name, laptops should never be used in the lap without proper protection. Whilst not so risky for women, in men it can literally slow cook their bits and pieces, causing fertility issues down the track. Although even as a female, it could burn you if the outside heats up to match that inside temperature.

This is why I like my trusty desktop. It can be portable too! I just need a very large luggage bag.

Thank you!

A desktop would have been a bit of a bitch to get over here I think ;)
