“J-Joey?” Yugi asked, stifling a yawn, standing in the open door of his hotel room. “What are you doing here? It’s the middle of the night…”
“Please tell me you have room in here for someone else,” Joey replied, almost desperately.
“Yeah, but why-“ Yugi started to ask, when Joey moved aside and swept his arm towards Yami standing behind him in black button-down pajamas, carrying a blanket and his suitcase, and looking sort of put-out.
“Please take him.”
“Geez, what I am, a homeless puppy?” Yami grumbled.
“I don’t get it…” Yugi began, confused.
“Yami is keeping me awake, I can’t sleep at all and it’s driving me nuts,” Joey started in. “This bunk bed thing isn’t working. He keeps tossing and turning constantly. It’s like trying to sleep under a counter with a running eggbeater on top of it.”
Yugi quickly re-arranged his face to hide his amusement at the indignation that appeared in Yami’s expression.
“Anyway, I can’t sleep. So can Yami please crash in your room? I want to be wide-awake for Disney tomorrow.”
“Sure, I don’t mind. You can stay in my room, Yami, it’s cool.”
“At least somebody respects me,” Yami shot at Joey, and walked into Yugi’s room with as much dignity as he could.
“Thank you,” Joey said gratefully, and trudged off back towards his room. Yugi smiled wryly and closed the door, turning around.
“So, Yami…this is a one-bed room, but-“
“It’s alright, I can sleep on the floor.” Yami shrugged, shaking his blanket out.
“Yeah, but like I was going to say, the bed is king-sized so there’d be plenty of room for you to toss and turn to your heart’s delight, if you want. I just need a little space on one side, and I sleep pretty heavily, so you wouldn’t bother me.”
“That would be okay with you?” Yami asked, looking up at Yugi, struggling to keep a sudden red blush from showing too badly. Luckily, Yugi seemed distracted, setting Yami’s bag beside his in the closet of the hotel room, not allowing Yami much view of his face.
“Sure, why not? There’s plenty of room,” he replied, still turned away.
“Oh…well…okay then. Thank you.” Yami abandoned the blanket and slid under the covers of the big bed, lying perfectly straight. Yugi got in on the other side and rolled onto his side, reaching out to turn the light off. The room went dark.
“G’night Yami.”
“…Night Yugi.”
Yami heard Yugi rustle around a little, then go silent. He’d probably been sleeping fine before Joey woke him up so it was easy for him to go back to sleep. Yami lay there quietly, looking up at the ceiling and feeling himself blush. He didn’t feel like tossing and turning right now. He was in Yugi’s bed. Sure it wasn’t like that, but…
There was actually a few feet of space between himself and Yugi, but Yami still felt scared to move. He felt so shy and embarrassed here, and yet thrilled at the same time to know that just feet away was Yugi. Lifting himself up, through the light of the window he saw Yugi curled on his side, his back to Yami. He was breathing deeply and evenly, and his face was relaxed and peaceful. Yami smiled softly at him and sat up all the way, watching Yugi breathe for a moment. He wanted to reach out and stroke his face and to touch the skin that looked so soft and perfect. He wanted to run his fingers through Yugi’s hair, and to hold the boy tightly to himself…but he knew he couldn’t. That would be hard to explain to Yugi if he woke up. And yet he wanted to touch him so badly…
“…Sweet dreams…Yugi…” Yami whispered gently into the darkness, and then lay back down, stretching out. Right then his toes barely brushed against Yugi’s leg under the blankets. Yami froze, blushing bright red now. Yugi didn’t move at all, probably having felt nothing. With a shaky breath Yami chanced to scoot a little bit closer, and then closed his eyes, trying to sleep.
Right then, Yugi suddenly rolled over.
Yami’s eyes shot open at the sound and found his face about a foot from Yugi’s. His breath caught up inside himself completely. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move, couldn’t do anything. Yugi was only a foot away. He could actually feel Yugi’s warm breath hitting his neck when he exhaled. He stared at Yugi’s closed eyes for a long time. Yami didn’t know how long it was, he only knew he couldn’t think straight right now. Some hair fell across Yugi’s face. He never looked more innocent or beautiful than he did at this moment.
Yami swallowed hard and reached out unthinkingly, tucking the stray hairs behind Yugi’s ear. He allowed his fingers to rest upon Yugi’s cheek for just a moment, then pulled them away. He shouldn’t be doing this.
And yet, it felt so right.
Moving just a little closer, Yami gently put one arm around Yugi’s shoulders, holding the boy at his chest somewhat awkwardly. His heart raced at Yugi’s closeness. At that moment, Yugi shuffled closer to him and buried his face into Yami’s neck and chest, his hands coming up and holding himself there. He didn’t say anything, just cuddled up against Yami and sighed deeply and stayed still, his head now resting in the crook of Yami’s neck, his lips touching Yami’s skin.
It was enough to cause Yami’s heart to stop for a moment. But Yami knew that nobody asleep could have done that. And he saw a shy, contented smile appear on Yugi’s lips and a red blush form on his cheeks, and smiled too, hugging the boy now and just feeling so good as he closed his eyes and held Yugi gently in his arms, stroking his hair and caressing that perfect skin. Yugi’s heartbeat was pounding softly nearby.
The next day, they would have to remember to thank Joey.
