You know the ratings system is broken when...

When I move, I will be rated 4th in North Carolina.  I'm sorry, but I shouldn't be 4th in anything.

I'm not too worried about my rating.  I know that it is inflated, so if it goes down some then that is fine.  Asheville just won't have the same community that I have here and less opportunities to learn from players who are genuinely better than I am ( Read more... )

I was in Tempe (and will be back within 24 hours) for school, and the only club I went to was once a week with maybe 10 people per week, with only one (sometimes two) worthy opponents. I found myself playing TONS on ISC during my stay down there, because I wasn't getting nearly enough high level live games in person. Usually I goof around on ISC, but I found myself playing more serious, 20 minute games to compensate for the situation.

ISC is always harder for me to swallow. I find that I don't really care about the results and so I play half-assed. It's been at least a full year since I've been on there and I never really had a desire to go back. I guess though once I don't have the community around me, I might have to just get over it.

"Does anyone else have any tips on how to get by in a smaller Scrabble community?"

You might have to resort to playing with yourself to get your Scrabble fix... also known as Scrabsturbation.

I have 10 years experience of living in the Scrabble back woods. I think it has some benefits. Not being able to play against good competition on a regular basis, is part of what's kept me interested in the game this long.

For me it is just the opposite. Playing high quality players in person and talking about the games is what gets me super excited about Scrabble. I guess I will have to figure out ISC or something. It just seems so hollow.

i can't actually think ahead as far as February in my current state of moving craziness, but i think i will be considering that tourney, especially since i've never been to the carolinas, and they're the last states that i haven't been to along the coastline.

That would be great if you're able. I am definitely going to have to come to a Northeasterly tournament some time next year.
