So you'd rather eat my dust?

I have just been told by the short, slight, largely ball-less supervisor of today’s temp job (totally new place, trying to get a way from the disorganization of the old place) that it’s okay to surf the web if there’s no work to do (which there isn’t) but it’s not okay to work on my animation script writing on my laptop ( Read more... )

There may be some nerves involved because they don't feel sure they can trust you and your alien equipment yet. And they may be worried that if you're turned away from the screen looking at your own PC, you may miss emails, etc. about work.

But I'm glad you're getting some timeto work on your really important project!

Yeah, thought about that, too.

I do realize that I basically do resent having agreed to be here at all. So I guess that's why I was thinking about trying to right that little mistake before we all start to hate each other, which we may or may not.

Still - there's the fact that everybody but us is a wanker, right?? :P

Of course!

Still I've been in the position of having to enforce idiotic rules, and probably will be again. Your supervisor may be as convinced as you are the situation is ridiculous.

*dances with pleasure as she remembers she is not currently responsible for supervising anyone except MissM's self*

Honey, you've been hanging around too many bears;).

He or She, since you don't specify, may also have the following dilemma: how to keep temps looking busy and not have to waste time explaining to partners/bean counters why you're sitting there doing you nails, chatting on the phone, or working on your laptop. Not that you would do any but number 3. If you're surfing, at least you look busy. Your friend is right- the supervisor, no matter how ball-less, probably thinks it's idiotic as well.

Consider chatting (ok,flirting) with the IT guy/person. He/she/it may have a way around your problem. Besides, if you can surf, can't you email yourself rough drafts of stuff? Or privately post on Live Journal?

Well, duh. :P

explaining to partners/bean counters why you're sitting there doing you nails, chatting on the phone, or working on your laptop.

Okay, okay, I admit it - it looks bad. I just get irked at the idea of being asked to put aside my career in order to work at my McJob - which is totally my own doing, because I agreed to work here. And if I don't want that I'm going to have to tell them I can't do it, which my financial situation will probably support, but maybe not in the grand style I was hoping for when I rubbed my hands together greedily and thought of the income from two jobs.
