It passed, we're boned...

This entry probably isn't what you're expecting. Yes its about the health care reform. Am I upset that it passed? You're damned right I am. Its complete and utter crap legislation that does nothing to address the underlaying problems of our health care. Its nothing but an exercise in vanity perpetrated by its chief architect, Obama. At best all its ( Read more... )

I can't say I understand the health care bill in detail, but I did look for answers to specific questions I had about how it's supposed to work, and the answers I found were not encouraging.

I don't think it's fair to say the Republicans didn't offer an alternative. Paul Ryan offered their alternative. Maybe it was better or worse than what was passed, but the idea that the Republicans offered nothing but saying no isn't really true.

Perhaps it would be fair to say that the party as a general body didn't succeed in distancing itself from the verbally abusive, hate-spewing, fear-mongering, misinformed idiots.

And accurate to say that across the board, the people with the best ideas somehow never make it onto network news...

Neither party succeeded in any way at distancing itself from the verbally abusive, hate-spewing, fear-mongering, misinformed idiots. There were plenty of those to go around, and no monopoly on them at all.

Point, I suppose. Now that you mention it, there was a lot of "Republican health care means don't get sick" going around.

The bill that was passed was an eviscerated version of what it should have been...eviscerated to attempt to placate the Republicans who lacked any constructiveness in the process. As long as there is one political party digging its heels in and refusing to actually F*ing govern, we're going to get bills that are "the best we can do."

You raise an excellent point here. I don't agree with most Republican political stances, as a general trend, but I don't agree with all Democratic stances, either. While I have a history of voting Democratic, it's a real shame when I find myself leaning a particular way because there are only two options and they're almost entirely antithetic.

Not all Republicans were constructive, but people like Paul Ryan did offer meaningful reforms that might have actually made a difference.

I'm not intimately familiar with the details of this plan. Obviously, I would have favoured a model of health-care that would be too radical for many Democrats -- and would cause some of Obama's more strident opponents to lose their voices from scraming "socialism!"

That being said, I probably fall into the "something is better than nothing" camp. There are aspects of this bill that trouble me, though. If it is now mandatory to buy health insurance, will that be an additional financial burden for low-income Americans?

Cheers,

Bruce
