Our tax dollars at work

My co-worker has just been informed by the post office (after standing an hour in line) that they can't swap the old 23 cent postcard stamps for 24 cent stamps because THEY WON'T EVEN HAVE THEM UNTIL MARCH ( Read more... )

Auuuugggghhhh! I'm a little horrified at how furious this makes me - When did I get this CRAZY? The post office has *always* been crazy - apparently it's contagious... :::whimper:::

I've lived and/or worked in the Washington, DC area for over 40 years, so I am qualified to offer this comment. A few years ago, during the Clinton administration, the Government was shut down for about 6 weeks because there was allegedly no money to run it. The Senate did not pass the bill to keep it running. Did anybody really notice? Anyway -- rush hour traffic in DC was cut by about 80% -- best commutes we ever saw. So, after a 6-week vacation for Government employees, the Senate passed the bill to pay Gov't employees. They get a 6-week vacation with pay, no Government work was done. Go figure. Then they go back to work and clog up the streets for the rest of us. I work in private industry; we work on 2 Government holidays, Columbus Day and Veteran's Day. Every day's commute should be that good. And let 3 flakes of snow start falling, they all want to leave work early. Jeez, such whiners.

I've lived through several rate hikes and don't remember that the Post Office ever showed much sign of advance preparation or anticipation of what customers might need.

I can sympathize with your co-worker as I went to the post office yesterday to mail ONE LETTER. I had a 37 cent stamp on the envelope already and only wanted to get a 2 cent stamp out of the machine. Don't you know they were SOLD OUT ... in both machines (and it was also OUT OF CHANGE) The line was too long for my impatient ass so I said, fuck it. I put a dollar into the machine and bought two 39 cent stamps and let the post office keep my 22 cents in change. then I carefully peeled the 37 cent stamp off the envelope, stuck it to my hand, attached the new stamp and brought the old one back home, where I promptly attached it to an envelope. All I need now is a 2 cent stamp!

Augh! You know, if they had given us some *warning* maybe the lines wouldn't be a thousand miles long. Of course, if the told us the DIDN"T HAVE STAMPS to sell us, maybe some of us would have stayed home too. Grrrrrr.....

I heard about this about three weeks ago and asked for 2 cent stamps then because I remember the last rate hike..:P I bought something like three sheets of the state stamps, and then they raised the rates and I had to get the add-ons. And the extra stamps (3 cent I think) were so ugly that I was trying to get in soon this time so I could get some that were a little prettier...

Yeah, I try hard anymore not to get crazy about the news..there are so many insane things going on in the world and in this cuntry that...yeah. I just can't do it anymore, makes me nuts. It brings to mind the saying of Fight the battles that are most important and that I don't have to fight every battle that comes my way.
