How can I call myself a fangirl???

So, I'm prowling around Wikipedia and I am flabbergasted to learn that Terry Woods of the Pogues STARTED OUT IN STEELEYE SPAN. The Pogues, people, are on that list... The list of '5 things that shaped your whole life and made you the person you are today'.

If that wasn't enough to strip me of my fangirl status, another little tidbit: The band ( Read more... )

It looks like I don't have it either - the couple of discs I have of theirs are from later...

I love Kirsty MacColl. Was very sorry to hear when she died.

I know - And it was SO AWFUL. Some jerk drove his boat into a 'swim only' zone and killed her in front of her kids. I can't imagine ever being able to recover from watching someone kill my Mother in front of me. And she was so amazingly talented - so unfair.

I will admit that I never got into the Pogues

They're not for everyone - and a whole different sort of egg from classic 70s folk-rock! My love of them is kind of above and beyond rational appreciation - I'm not out to convince anyone. ;-) It was one of those moments where you hear something you've never heard before across a crowded room and it leads you into a whole new spiritual universe.

Contrary to the other bands that you've mentioned I actually do know who the Pogues are, and I have one album..Love and...something...the one where they're really drunk. ;) Has Lorelai and the one about cursing Oliver Cromwell and Boat Train. Good band.

Peace & Love. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite song from any of the first three or four albums, but Lorelai is way up there. See if your library has 'Red Roses for Me' and 'Rum, Sodomy & The Lash'... Just as good and/or better than P&L.

I'm just surprised to hear that someone this side of the Atlantic has heard of the Pogues. Irish folk-rock is so underrated.

Oh, they were HUGE in alternative music scene in California in the 80s and 90s... They led me into both the Irish traditional scene and the Punk scene - both of which I had never had contact with in the early 80s (it's prime.) I was the late-comer.

Have you ever heard of Les Négresses Vertes? Now, THAT's obscure! ;-)

I love Kirsty too!
Very sad when I heard she died :) Fortunately, many years ago the local tv station played all her clips up to and including 'Electric Landlady'.
