Proswatch Community Viewing: Close Quarters

This has always been one of my very favorite episodes - And definitely my favorite Bodie episode... I get flack when I talk about it because what I see in Bodie in this episode is a characterization a lot of fans disagree with (and I can never defend myself in a debate - I'm no good with words ( Read more... )

We might not agree on the episode but we both ended our posts with a more or less similar pic *snicker*

Just went an read yours... Yeah, guess we just totally see different things here. ;-)

D'oh! I totally forgot to mention Doyle barging up into the attic screaming for Bodie... I *love* that!

We've picked some of the same fave moments. ;) I really prefer eps with more B/D interaction, though.

I do prefer partner interaction but just once, it's interesting to see what happens to Bodie when he's forced to act completely on his own... I think it reveals things about why Doyle, Cowley, and Bodie work so incredibly as a team.

Yes, they do. Especially Bodie and Doyle. ;)

I like this ep - it's not quite a favourite, but I have no problem rewatching. You're right about seeing a very primal Bodie here - we get dark Bodie in other eps (H/H, WJ), but not quite as exposed, as raw. That makes for some very interesting interactions, with Helmut & with Julia, as neither of them are weak characters.

It's like the focus group from hell
*LOL*

I think it's a little different in H/H and WJ... Bodie actually has some direction with his aggro in those eps... It feels really different to me in CQ - Sharon says it better than I can over at Dave's site: "He can be charming, he can be deadly. But he is not a manager! Bodie ***NEEDS*** a partner and a boss!"

That's whats so utterly sublime and gorgeous about this episode/Bodie - They so perfectly illustrate why Doyle, Bodie, and Cowley work so incredibly well together by showing us how Bodie flounders/his limitations in a situation on his own. And being with Doyle/Cowley not only make what he *is* good at shine, it makes him a better person. Sometimes a show will *tell* you that about a character, but they don't often *show* you.

I just think that's gorgeous to watch and Lew does an amazing job with it.

LOL! When I was growing up my Mom was always into "encounter groups" and retreat weekends... Seems like I spent half my life locked in a room with people having feelings and talking out ( ... )

Not a fav ep of mine mainly because the lads are apart, but it's watchable in the right mood. I have too many nagging things about the plot. But there are definite highlights in this ep, as there are in all the eps, even the ones I think are weaker or a bit dull.

My brain sort of recognizes that the plot is a bit weak but somehow I still love the whole thing from start to finish - It just keeps rolling along, you don't really get any time to stop and think about anything. Except for how Bodie just *happens* to find Meyer, I never really have trouble with the rest of it... Oh, wait... Shooting at Cowley's car - *That* bugs me. I mean, they establish the bullet wouldn't have much power if it hit anything but hey - If it breaks a window it could do some damage to Cowley's head. WTF?

Definitely not one of my faves, no matter how I try to explain Bodie's actions! I can go with primal, I can go with dark Bodie, but I can't go with stupid Bodie - unless he's on alot of pain meds! Maybe it's the pain meds, we just never see him take them... hmmn, maybe I can go with delusional Bodie, so that not only does his honest dark side come out, but he's clumsy about it... That's my real argument with this ep - well, and that I want the lads interacting!

And I know it's insulting to my English pals, but I think his comment about the English is hilarious:
Bodie: May we have a drink? I think we all need one...
Meyer: LOL...May I have a drink, vicar? So polite, vicar...Let's all have a little tea party! You English are all insane...
Don't know many English that'd be insulted by that, actually, they'd probably be the first to make fun of it, in fact! There's a whole "More tea, vicar?" thing about that sort of situation. Oh, and I just found this googling which is apparently part of the National Curriculum, and just shows ( ... )

Erm - Dave's site? Although if someone called Matt has also got a site, I'd like to know about it! *g*

...but I can't go with stupid Bodie...
I don't think that's it at all
Oh, but for whatever reason (and I'm perfectly happy to find one for him, and I can go along with the one that you give here too!) surely you have to admit that he was acting stupidly?! I mean, there was very little that he did that was a good plan/smart way of dealing with things...

Sometimes a show will *tell* you that about a character, but they don't often *show* you.
Isn't that called subtext? *vbg*

So, it's possible that Meyer was actually pulling in a cultural reference there
Well, in the context of the character, I'd say not - not the way he was using it - but in the context of the writers who created his character, I'd say so...

Like us quoting a line from a TV show when talking to someone. Hmm...Erm... more like you talking about...erm... the various stereotypical high school characters that ( ... )

D'oh! Yes, I mean Dave... Why do I always call him Matt??? :::headdesk:::

surely you have to admit that he was acting stupidly?!

I think I'm being unduly distracted by the word "stupid"... It's just not the word I'd use but yeah, he was making some bad decisions and did not posses some of the skills he needed on this job. I found that interesting to watch and thought it gave Bodie a depth of character that bordered the sublime - I think others considered it bad writing and felt Bodie was completely out of character. To each his/her own - but depending on how you look at it, it *does* profoundly change how we see the character much, much later (and especially in fanfiction) so it continues to be a hot-spot in the community. ;-)

Sorry if I'm being annoying - I'm not trying to pick a fight, just playing around with trying to express myself (not something I'm good at.) :-(
