Proswatch Community Viewing: Close Quarters

This has always been one of my very favorite episodes - And definitely my favorite Bodie episode... I get flack when I talk about it because what I see in Bodie in this episode is a characterization a lot of fans disagree with (and I can never defend myself in a debate - I'm no good with words ( Read more... )

Sharon says it better than I can over at Matt's site
Erm - Dave's site? Although if someone called Matt has also got a site, I'd like to know about it! *g*

...but I can't go with stupid Bodie...
I don't think that's it at all
Oh, but for whatever reason (and I'm perfectly happy to find one for him, and I can go along with the one that you give here too!) surely you have to admit that he was acting stupidly?! I mean, there was very little that he did that was a good plan/smart way of dealing with things...

Sometimes a show will *tell* you that about a character, but they don't often *show* you.
Isn't that called subtext? *vbg*

So, it's possible that Meyer was actually pulling in a cultural reference there
Well, in the context of the character, I'd say not - not the way he was using it - but in the context of the writers who created his character, I'd say so...

Like us quoting a line from a TV show when talking to someone. Hmm...
Erm... more like you talking about...erm... the various stereotypical high school characters that tend to be depicted in American movies - the cheerleader, the jock, the nerd, the slut-with-a-heart etc. They're kind of based on a deeper truth, but they've come to life on their own as well...

D'oh! Yes, I mean Dave... Why do I always call him Matt??? :::headdesk:::

surely you have to admit that he was acting stupidly?!

I think I'm being unduly distracted by the word "stupid"... It's just not the word I'd use but yeah, he was making some bad decisions and did not posses some of the skills he needed on this job. I found that interesting to watch and thought it gave Bodie a depth of character that bordered the sublime - I think others considered it bad writing and felt Bodie was completely out of character. To each his/her own - but depending on how you look at it, it *does* profoundly change how we see the character much, much later (and especially in fanfiction) so it continues to be a hot-spot in the community. ;-)

Sorry if I'm being annoying - I'm not trying to pick a fight, just playing around with trying to express myself (not something I'm good at.) :-(

You're not being annoying at all - I like hearing different people's views, especially on something like this. That's what I like about lj! But if you'd rather I just shut up and listened instead of talking back, feel free to say so!

That's all I'm doing too... Tell me to sod off whenever you like! *g*
