went to the premiere of the director's cut of donnie darko last night at the dobie, sponsored by ain't it cool news, pedazo chunk, sxsw, and newmarket films...
richard kelly and harry knowles did a Q & A afterwards.
i asked if the real reason donnie darko died was because he didn't ever want to be asked to do a sequel (besides all of the myriad Read more... )

I saw the director's cut too. Donnie Darko is very Chris-like character - he has to die (sacrifice himself) to save the world (or else the movie wouldn't make much sense at least to me).

Have you seen the regular cut? I tremendously enjoyed the extra scenes in the director's cut. For instance, the eye graphics and the restaurant conversation between Darko's parents were not in the regular cut....

i get the feeling like he really wants to move beyond donnie darko to prove to himself and the world that his creativity didn't peak with his first film.

It almost feel bad for the guy - how do you top a movie like Donnie Darko? I want him to don't get me wrong but this was a hell of a start.

Thanks for sharing the Q&As. I actually missed the special showing with all the cast, Q&As, etc in Seattle (I am still beating myself for it).
