went to the premiere of the director's cut of donnie darko last night at the dobie, sponsored by ain't it cool news, pedazo chunk, sxsw, and newmarket films...
richard kelly and harry knowles did a Q & A afterwards.
i asked if the real reason donnie darko died was because he didn't ever want to be asked to do a sequel (
besides all of the myriad other interpretations)...
essentially, he said that he wrote the story at a very dark point in his life, and that he just felt that his anti-hero had to die in this one.

i get the feeling like he really wants to move beyond donnie darko to prove to himself and the world that his creativity didn't peak with his first film.
according to harry knowles, his new scripts continue to kick serious ass.
