Fanfic vs Books - absorption levels

That is to say, how thoroughly I get absorbed in each type of reading to the point where everything else falls away. Books have exerted a near total absorption on me most of my life. Fanfic, while definitely engaging and enjoyable, was generally read while I was still connected to the internet and that meant I was always/already not focusing ( Read more... )

every other sense basically goes away and all I am aware of is the story in front of me.THIS! I miss my daily reading time on the bus to and from work (and during breaks). So weird how I now have all the time in the world at home and I just can't get myself to start in a new book. *sighs* Thanks for reminding me I should create moments to dive into an original (paper!) story again. (I've allowed myself some time to adjust to my new life by taking comfort in fanfic classics ( ... )

I'm reading Val McDermid at the moment - lots of LGBT and non-white people. All characters, no matter gender etc, are either smart or horrible or whatever equally.

On the downside, her stories are about rapes and murders, mostly. I'm reading Skeleton Road which is about the war in the Balkans, and a murder.

But good characters if you can stomach the murders and rapes.
