I've been reading The Terror by Dan Simmons lately.  It's an amazing horror novel that while featuring copious amounts of gore, is much more about atmosphere and the humanity (and inhumanity) of the characters.  It's also a great piece of historical fiction.

I just have one problem with it.  The ferocious beast that's hunting the characters is
