How to Write the Great American Indian Novel

All of the Indians must have tragic features: tragic noses, eyes, and arms.
Their hands and fingers must be tragic when they reach for tragic food.

The hero must be a half-breed, half white and half Indian, preferably

I'll have to email Backus and see if he can find out what the title was for me. I read it at a friend's house in NY but I really can't remember what it was called.

Which one? You would really like Louise Erdrich I think, and Sherri Reynolds as well, esp. Bitteroot Landing.

...and THAT is why I love Sherman Alexie. In a purely non-gay kinda way... Unless it's the indian woman buried deep inside me loving an indian man....Oh, crap! I think I have a chick in me. Eww eww eww get her out get her out get her out...wait... be cool..it might not be so bad...yeah..now I can wear pretty dresses and blame it on the woman in me.....ummm...wait..what were we talking about?

i didnt know you liked him! He is one of my fav writers, his movies are incredible. In The Business of Fancy Dancing they read this poem. Years ago they brought Fancy Dancing to Eastman house and the main actors for panel. It was awesome, like original awesome, not hot dog awesome.

LOVED the movie "Smoke Signals." Saw it a bajillion times and then went with my Mom and K8 to a lecture given by Gary Farmer a couple of years after.
