Random thoughts - microtransactions

I read a bunch of different stuff. Eliza posted a little blurb to her ell-jay some time ago that she was writing for Kotaku. I clicked the link, read a few things, and liked what I saw. So I started reading it more regularly. Not all the time, but when I have a moment and need a distraction, it's usually got something I find interesting ( Read more... )

The only thing that gives the impression that they are "cutting out" a portion is timing. If they held onto it for awhile, then it would seem different, without actually being any different.

True. A large portion of the impression comes from timing.

Also, in general, I think maps are probably a poor use of the micro-transaction system. Traditional PC games have had user created maps since pretty much the beginning. It's something we are used to getting for free. The developers just need to spend a little time creating a tool, and the community will take care of the rest.

*shrug* I'm still pretty anti-microtransactions. Mostly my mind wandered and I ended up in some strange gamer utopia where I only have to pay for content I actually used.

The same thing happens in regards to cable all the time. How great would it be if I could pay my $8 a month and get SCIFI, SpikeTV, Discovery and HGTV or whatever Shannon watches all those design/real estate type shows on. Stop paying for 150 channels that I don't watch, and most importantly, stop paying for a handful of channels with agendas that I am actively against. Why do I have to give these jackasses money so I can watch some scifi, WTF?!

Sorry, that is a tangent. ;)

There's always rumblings about episodic content for more ambitious games, and I supoose the new Sin is doing it, but it's really microtransactions that will make that possible. Imagine a big episodic RPG where each chapter takes about 3-4 hours to beat and costs $10. Lots of cliffhangers!

Yeah, I think I'd dig it. Depends on actual cost vs value though.
