The spider thief has been found. My gratitude goes to whomever pursued him. Whom might I thank for retrieving the key?

+shepard, +garrus, naught but duty

Don't thank me yet.

We need to have a chat, you and I.

Commander Shepard.

You have something you wish to say?

Sure do.

I'm not in any rush to hand the key over, yet. Lost my helmet getting ahold of it and had my teammate attacked by a pissed-off bush. I think we're entitled to some extra intel, don't you?

I don't. But I'm not fool enough to think that will deter you.

As for your losses, such as they are, had either of you expressed an inclination to go after the key, then I would have been able to warn you. At least you had the good sense not to go alone.

Alright, let me put it this way.

If we asked you to do us a favor, would you? Without getting anything from the deal?

[Shepard would like to live in a world where the answer is 'yes', but she knows better.]

And who is to say that you have not already benefited?

I'll bite. Have I benefited in some way that I've just been too unobservant to notice?

I would not disparage your powers of observation. The benefit in retrieving a key which could release unspeakable danger is that unspeakable danger is not unleashed.

It is not a thing very easily noticed.

Be nice to know what the danger is, that you apparently can't speak of it.

I am certain. But your team mate and I have already discussed this. It is enough that I have told both of you that the key secures a particular danger. I will say no more than that, and particularly not while the key is out of my hands. If you would have information of me, ask something else.

No.

This is not going to be a dictatorship. You say you want to save us? Give us a reason to believe it. I know how hard it is to prove that my world's supposedly been culled, but your words and actions aren't making us want to be good, helpful castle denizens.

You have reason to believe it; you are here, by Lord Deior's hand. If that is not reason enough for you, then there is little else I can say on the matter. You are asking me to trust you with dangerous information while making it quite plain that you do not trust my word. And I am yet to hear assurances that in exchange for my trust, you will return the stolen key.

Point taken. I promise you that in exchange for your cooperation, I'll willingly give up the key.

Don't know about you, but I keep my promises.

How comforting.

Has it occurred to you that I am doing exactly as you ask? You demand that I demonstrate my Lord's honourable intentions while making it plain that my word alone is not enough to convince you. That being the case, there is nothing more I have to say. I would have the pilfered key so that everyone here might continue to be safe. I will not tell you what it binds, so that none might seek to free it to their own ends.

However, if you insist upon being so stubborn, then keep it. But keep it safe. And it will be on your head should anyone in this keep come to harm because of it.

You really need to work on your pitch, lady.

I've said I have an issue with the hamfisted way you're handling inquiries, not that I don't believe what you have to say. If I didn't, I wouldn't even bother trying to get a straight answer out of you. Think about it.

Look... I can be a closed-mouthed ass if that's what it takes. Do you want to meet in person?

I am in the tea rooms, if you would prefer to speak face-to-face. But it will not change anything that I have said. I am grateful for your retrieving the key and am willing to reward you, if that is your wish. But I will not talk about what the key conceals. If that is all you wish to discuss, then do not trouble yourself.
