That was a really great moment. I think they've acknowledged the slashers a few times before (the wedding scene in SG-1's 200 has a line hinting at Jack/Daniel), but I think this is the first time that homosexuality was dealt with as a serious option, rather than a joke. I hope to see more along these lines in the future!

Oh yes, I remember 200. But as you mentioned it was a joke. Inside of a fantasy. So it was just really gratifying to hear this. Especially from John :)

.. I've somehow fallen in love with Rodney and would really like to talk about it, because I think it's beginning to drive me crazy."

Awwwwww.

That interpretation works for me. *flails*

And when I say "talk about it", I of course mean stumbling around.

"No, not a man. Why? You interested in a man?"

"Uh... Nah. Not interested, really. Just..."

"McKay?"

"Uh, well..."

"He always talks about women."

"I know! It's nothing really. So anyone you're interested in?"

"I could talk to him for you. Ask if he's into guys."

"What?! No. Thanks, but... really not necessary. Unless you're curious and just happen to mention it. But no."

And then of course Rodney's reaction to that talk :)

Ah, I shall write it down when I get home.

I love that bit so much, and the way JF delivers the line - it's not the slightest bit jokey, and how wonderful is that?

He makes it sound normal - and how rare is that on TV?

I know. And that's such a small thing -- it should be a small thing -- but it means so much.

That was such a wonderful line, wasn't it? I was so happy that it wasn't treated like a joke.

And I like your reasoning as to John's motivation. *g*

Yes, this was so much better than a joke could have been.

And I like your reasoning as to John's motivation. *g*
I just find it hard to believe that John would bring this up for no real reason. When Ronon clarifies "You mean like a woman", he's asking "you mean romantically". To add "Or a man" doesn't really make sense to me, because if Ronon was dating a man he'd have phrased that differently.

The whole thing just strikes me as something no heterosexual guy would say unless he had a reason to believe the other person is gay. Which leaves me with the impression that John wanted to volunteer that information for other reasons.

Honestly, when I saw that, I was thinking "OMG, we're canon now?!" ;)

This line is so cool, even for a straight guy! eveningblue July 25 2007, 22:53:36 UTC

I love this line too, and I hope you don't mind my disagreeing with you, but how about, "unless the person he's asking is very secretive about his sex life"? Obviously, John doesn't know what's going on in Ronon's life, they are having a special bonding moment here and John wants to talk about more personal stuff than usual, and also to let Ronon know that he cares about him.

I actually thought this moment was cool from a straight person's perspective, because the way John asks this is implying that it would be no big deal, and that it's a possibility that Ronon might be dating a guy! How cool is that? I agree with what other posters have said about the way the line is delivered and how it is made to be normal and no big deal. I love that!

I like your interpretation too! But if John is straight this makes him a very cool straight guy, imho.

I just find it hard to believe that John would bring ( ... )

Oh, I certainly love the line in its "canon" interpretation of a heterosexual guy being open-minded.

And I agree that assuming that another man could either be in a relationship with a woman or a man (and saying so) is not too surprising. What gets me though in this case is that Ronon has already implied with his question that he dates women. Maybe I'm seeing this too narrowly, but to me the conversation read like this:

"So are you seeing someone at the moment?"

"No, I don't have a girlfriend right now."

"So do you have a boyfriend?"

Do you see what I mean?

Of course Ronon could have just used women because the majority of guys are in romantic relationships with women and he's seen John with women. But even then it seems like an unnecessary and very deliberate display of John's open-mindedness.

In any case I love it :)
