At the risk of making this into a food blog (specifically, a bread-products blog), I made challah last weekend, and this weekend I want to make jiao-zi, pork curry, and perhaps lavender shortbread to keep at work. Lavender-caraway? Lavender-anise seed? hmmm. Now I need to find a source of lavender buds, and wonton wrappers. Nnngam. gotham_bound advised me of ( Read more... )

Hrm...possible to grow your own lavender? That way you'd know it hadn't been sprayed with God knows what.

Hm, maybe. Now's a really bad time to take up container gardening, since it'll soon be winter, and it's already damn cold in the mornings...

I used to buy lavender cheaply at Limbo in Portland. Just a thought. Oh how I heart lavender frosting :)

I'm probably going to hit Kalustyan's, just so I have yet another reason to go there. They're an Indian grocery store that carries a simply stunning array of exotic spices. They also have tiny painted marzipan fruits that come in a berry basket. :9

I thought about trying Pelindaba Lavender on San Juan Island, but their buds are $25 a pound, and I don't need a pound of lavender.

YUM....Sounds like a good plan. Regardless of the lavender it sounds like an excuse to go to that store as it sounds delightful.

Food grinders are really great for making sprouted grain bread. (Okay, mostly I just want other people to try it so I have someone to compare notes with.)

There will be further bread experiments in the Little Oven That Can. I think I'm a loooong way from being a yeast parent again, since I don't habitually keep loaves of bread around (my staple grain these days is brown rice) so the cost of yeast packets isn't a great burden, but that might be the next loaf.
