Allelectronics.com has some reasonably-priced white LED's. Lumileds LXHL-PW01's aren't cheap but lumen-per-dollar they're pretty impressive. I don't know if you need to blind yourself or someone else, but they're definitely the ticket for it.

I don't know about the translucency bit, but what you want is wool felt. I'm pretty sure it's sold at . And other places for less and not Merino.

That list is just Rube Goldbergian enough to make me wonder whether the things in it are all related to the same project and, if so, what you're up to. ~grin~

As far as the wool product you're describing, I second art_geek's analysis that you want felt. And I can confirm that they carry it at Purl (or at least they did when gipsieee and I were there back at the beginning of June...) though it might not be the translucency or loft you're looking for (depends on how picky you're being). Or you can make your own (I recommend The H2G2's entry on it here. It takes a bit more than just throwing it into boiling water, but that is definitely a key aspect)--or you could try to find some needle-felting equipment (which might make it easier to get the thickness/density you're looking for with greater consistency). (Apologies if you're a fiber artist and know all about felt and were just using that description to add to the aforementioned Rube Goldberg flavor of the list ^_^)

I do want felt. I was, I confess, going for the Goldbergian atmosphere you picked up on, but I didn't say "felt" because... well, two reasons. One, I plumb forgot the word. I was trying to remember the technical term for fabrics that are made by compression instead of a regular weaving or knitting process, of which wool felt is a subset. Two, I don't want the kind of opaque brightly colored felt you can get at any craft store. Would that ANY of my crafting desires were that simple. :) I'm thinking of something thick enough to feel luxurious and translucent when backlit, for a lamp covering, of course.

And I am just enough of a fiber artist to know what roving is, although not enough of one to feel unintimidated by needle-felting. :)

And yes, all the same project.

You do not want felt, it's almost never translucent..
What you want is roving / batting / raw wool (stinky, needs washed)... and felting needles..
Want a care package?
I have all of the above.. and your address too (if you gave it to me when I sent out the massive request)
Hugs

yipe!

Sounds like I may be signing up for needle felting after all!

Do you have some extra stash sitting around? That's exactly the kind of care package I like.. :) Color isn't quite important at this stage.

Yupyup..
You'll be getting natural because it's the one I have that's cheapest (which seems best for prototyping)..
And I'd like the needle felting stuff back when you're done with it..
But aside from that, it's all good.
I'll get it in the mail maybe tonight.

wow!!

Yeah, if I like it/end up carrying out the project, I'll just get my own tools, but it's nice to be able to borrow tools by mail.
