I always assumed that the only people driving in NYC were the people who couldn't avoid it, or had some specific strong aversion to taking public transit, given how miserable traffic seems to be. You want to really hate humanity? Read (reread if you have already read) the forums full of people discussing getting out of speeding tickets, and the forums where law enforcement officers whine about the people discussing getting out of speeding tickets.
Most of the people driving in NYC are doing so as a status symbol. They're not all nice cars, but they do overwhelmingly tend to be -- mostly nice, anyway, if you overlook all the damaged bumpers. I've seen a couple of people using private vehicles to move around things like food carts, but I am convinced that 98% of the drivers in Manhattan* just think their asses are too precious for the abundant cabs, buses, surface trains and subway trains that schlep us mere mortals around.

*Transit starts to get kinda thin at the north end of Manhattan. Specifically, it's hard to get crosstown, though there's still plenty of crosstown bus action. Maybe 150th St makes a good upper bound for the part of MNH where it just makes no fucking sense to drive.
Dude, you can't even park all day in Seattle for cheap, and Seattle has paid parking comparatively everywhere. Moreover, in Seattle you are likely to get ticketed even if you've paid.
oh man. so SO tempted. Every damn time I ride. If I started wearing my chain lock for quick access, I'd probably get arrested or killed by the end of the day.
