Book tucked under his arm, Kakashi wandered down the empty hallway to the kitchen to retrieve something decent to eat. It wasn't that the event wasn't providing him with decent meals--quite the contrary--but too many things were too sweet for his taste and, even if he has enjoyed them (which he didn't, but he ate one anyway), keeping a cinnamon bun in his room for a snack later would have only been asking for trouble with the cats and Shiori (as it was, keeping his pug's nose out of foods she couldn't eat but that were lying temptingly on the ground was enough of a hassle

The familiar presence came before the faint sound of footsteps, the distracting whine of the cabinet door as it swung on it's hinges and closed with a muted snap, and yet his attention still flickered to the corner of his eyes to the man standing in the doorway; hesitating. He attempted to ignore the possible reasons behind the pause, eyes falling back on the book, still reading, but with a limited comprehension as his divided attention monitored Kakashi as he moved across the living room

The book was his same one: Icha Icha Paradise. Kakashi knew it cover to cover. He knew which chapters were most commonly interrupted by challenges and during which scenes he had heard more cries of Sensei, can we go for ramen now? It was familiar and faithful, a memento of Konoha, and probably the most consistent thing from their world Kakashi had since coming to this one besides Neji.Maybe it was the only real consistent thing Kakashi had from their world

And as he thought, he couldn't talk to Kakashi. Neji blinked, eyes returned to his book, leaning back in a lethargic and seemingly careless motion, repressing the tired sigh in his chest.
"I see." Turning the page more for the sake of appearances than anything (he'd have to go back and reread the previous pages later anyway), he reassessed the situation with the added piece of information. The earlier pause must have been for the unexpected encounter.
'Unwanted', the thought slipped in, chiming in a manner that mimicked a bitter cheer despite his best efforts to ignore thoughts of that nature. The best option seemed to be leaving the room, but a fickle pride kept him from moving

"I see." Turning the page more for the sake of appearances than anything (he'd have to go back and reread the previous pages later anyway), he reassessed the situation with the added piece of information. The earlier pause must have been for the unexpected encounter.
