When it came to people to stay with in an unknown, unhospitable (or at least unfriendly) world, the Centauri ambassador would not have at the top of his list. He wouldn't have been on his list at all; the Centauri weren't his concern, and he had problems back home, things to take care of there. The last thing he needed was to be stuck somewhere with no way of getting home, no way of contacting it.

But when Londo had (sort of) offered some limited residency, Bester accepted. What little he'd heard of people over the network - not that he trusted that source entirely - made it seem as even though there were certainly other humans around, none of them were from a version of Earth that he recognized. And until he'd had more time to lurk about and be certain, it was better to stay with a known substance - even if it was a Centauri ( ... )

Londo opened the door and looked at the Earther for a moment before moving out of the doorway. "Do come in, Mr. Bester. It is good that you found the place without being eaten, hm?" He gestured in towards the rickety table. "I am quite aware that it is not much, but it is not nothing." And that was the key to surviving in this city, making sure you did not have nothing.

He kept an eye on Bester. He did not know what it looked like when a telepath scanned someone, but he would not put it past the other. After all, if he had some way to gather more information on Bester, he would be putting it to use. "This is temporary, yes? I am not a host, I do not do roommates. But you are a familiar name in a very much unfamiliar world, and I will not leave you out on the streets in this place. I am not without heart."

It was a shame Vir had not shown up, or Adira. But at least it had not been G'Kar, or G'Kar's abominable aide Na'togh. He would be thankful to the Great Maker for small mercies, and be open to future, more positive arrivals.

Inspecting the Centauri just as quickly, Bester smiled easily at the invitation, and stepped inside. "I apologize for the inconvenience, Ambassador. These are... very strange circumstances we're in." He looked around the room with both curiosity and a touch of suspicion. Not as good as he'd hoped, but better than he'd feared, considering the state of the city.

"But don't worry; I won't take advantage of your hospitality for too long," he said, finding a chair near the table and sitting down, looking back over at Londo. "I don't think it would suit either of us."

He looked briefly aside, before fixing his gaze back on him, tone a touch more serious, but expression still entirely pleasant. "Now, how much do you know about this place?"

Londo gave Bester a matching smile. He was good at matching smiles. "It is no matter. It is only a little thing." And, of course, it would put Bester in his debt, as well. It was better to have people in his debt than be in theirs. "Yes, they are. This city, it is far from normal ( ... )
