It's nearly May, which means summer blockbuster season is nearly upon us. And holy smoke am I going to have a busy, movie going summer. Good thing I'm taking all of July off of work. So, what will I be taking in?
Iron Man: I'm not really a fan of Iron Man (the comic that is), but the trailers for this have looked AMAZING, and the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is brilliant (honestly, if they handed out Oscars for appropriate casting, this should totally be nominated), so we'll be taking this one in for sure.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian: I love the Chronicles of Narnia. I've loved them since my Grade 3 teacher read us The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I re-read all seven of them every year or so. I cannot wait for Jet to be old enough for me to read them to him. Now, this being said, the movie adaptation of LWW was... ok. The left some major thematic stuff out that I didn't agree with, but oh well. I'm still more than willing to see how they handle the first of the Caspian books.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: One of my very, very, very favourite movies is Raiders of the Lost Ark. I adore it. I think (even though I know it isn't) that it is nearly a perfect movie; great hero, great heroine, fabulous action, incredible stunts, good badguys (Nazis are always good badguys), its just all good. However, I can't say as much for the other two Indy films. Both have their moments, but they both also have large detractors for me that greatly affected my enjoyment of them (Kate Capshaw's character in Temple of Doom and the reduction of Sallah and Marcus to comedy relief in Last Crusade really bothered me). So that, and the fact that Lucas wrote the script for this one and all the time that's passed has left me a little... hesitant about this movie. But, I also know that my overwhelming love for Raiders will get me into the theatre as I'm sure I'll regret it if I don't see this.
The Hulk: Once again, not a big fan of the Hulk. Didn't really like Ang Lee's version of it all that much either. So, why do I want to go see this? Because the Hulk raging down Yonge Street is something I have to see.
The Dark Knight: Ah, and now we get to the comic book based movie I do really want to see. I AM a fan of Batman. And I was particularly impressed with Christian Bale's Batman (and Bruce Wayne). Batman Begins was the first of the live-action Batman movies that actually felt it was about Batman, and not the various villains he was fighting. And well, Heath Ledger's Joker looks truly frightening, as the Joker should be. Cannot wait for this movie.
Wall-e: The latest offering from Pixar and well, these guys have yet to make a bad movie. While I liked Cars the least, I still didn't mind it, but things like Toy Story, Ratatouille and of course, the Increadibles, those are damn good movies. We'll obviously take Jet to see this too, but really, going to see a Pixar movie is never a hardship.
Pineapple Express: My Seth Rogen love is pretty darn high, and as he both writes and stars in this action-comedy, I am there. James Franco looks to be playing a character following in the stoner footsteps of such luminaries as Jeff Spicoli and Floyd, and that looks hilarious.
Whew. I think that's it. Seems like a lot, but I'm sure there are probably a few I'm missing. I look forward to summer blockbuster season and not really having to use my brain much and just be entertained for a few months. By the time fall comes and the 'respectable' (re: Oscar bait) movies return, I'm ready to think a little more again :)
