I know, I haven't really said much about the playoffs this year, and yet, I am watching them. A lot. Basically, I haven't said anything because as far as I'm concerned, they're going along swimmingly.
Detroit is now up 3 games to none in their series with Colorado. I have nothing against the Avalanche, I'm terribly fond of Joe Sakic and I LOVE Ryan Smyth, but the Wings are my team and so despite my fondness for some Avs, I have to root for Detroit. They're doing very well, neither Datsyuk or Zetterberg have disappeared this year and Johan Franzen? Yeah, he's a keeper.
It's strange to find myself cheering for Dallas. Years and years of them playing Edmonton (usually in the first round) meant I was always ferverently cheering against them. The year they won the Cup (1999), I wanted Buffalo to win. So yeah, never, ever cheered for the Stars. Till now. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, the saying goes, and with the Stars playing the Ducks in the first round, well, I found myself cheering for the Stars 'cause I hate the Ducks THAT much. Now, in the second round, I find myself still cheering for the Stars, although I don't really have anything against the San Jose Sharks. Last night's game between the two was some great hockey; lots of rushes; great goaltending; booming hits; and at one point, 8 minutes of uniterupted, furious play. T'was gorgeous.
There might not be an Alexander Ovechkin left in the playoffs, but there's still a Sydney Crosby and an Evgeni Malkin, and they are such fun to watch too. I thought the young Pens would have more trouble with the NY Rangers than they're having, but other than taking a boatload of stupid penalties; they're acquiting themselves quite admirably. So admirably in fact, that they're leading the series 3 games to none. The Penguins already swept Ottawa in the first round, could they be looking at consecutive sweeps? Cool.
The only disappointment is Montreal having difficulties with Philly. Don't like Philly. At all. And the Habs are the lone Canadian team left in the playoffs at this point, so I'm fine with them staying in there. Plus it makes ex-co-worker Martin happy. And anybody beating Philly is a good thing.
So yeah, for the most part, the hockey gods are smiling (as far as I'm concerned) and I'm enjoying the heck out of these playoffs.
