Chapter 4:

"EU KYANG KYANG"

“Hyung..yah!” Yoochun said, waving his hands around Jaejoong’s face. Jaejoong snapped out of it and looked at Yoochun, who had a worried expression on his face.

“Sorry, I was just daydreaming.” Jaejoong said, with a small smile on his face as he got up and looked around the room. Yoochun nodded, leaving Jaejoong alone with his thoughts, as he continued to sing his final composed song piece.

“Hyung…can you help me out with the chorus of this song?” Yoochun said scratching his head, and looking down at the piece of paper that held his composed song called “Love Bye Love”.

That was one of Jaejoong’s favorite songs composed by Yoochun, especially the rap part. Yoochun pointed to the lines on the paper of the parts that he wanted Jaejoong to sing, but Jaejoong shook his head, and pushed the paper back to Yoochun.

“Sorry, Yoochun-ah, but you know..I can’t sing..” Jaejoong said, gently pushing the paper back to Yoochun’s hands.

“Hyung, I’ve never heard you sing before, besides there’s always a first time for everything, why don’t you give it a try?” Yoochun asked, pushing the paper back into Jaejoong’s hands, who didn’t look too sure about it. But Yoochun wasn’t going to give up, he knew that Jaejoong can’t dance, so there has to be some other hidden talent that neither him nor Jaejoong know about.

"Chunnie, I don’t sing, don’t you understand? I can only dance..you know that already.” Jaejoong said, stubbornly, about to crumble Yoochun’s work of art. However, Yoochun had a plan up his sleeves.

“Hyung, I can’t pass this audition without you, and if I don’t pass, I’ll never get a chance to meet your favorite artist, Jung Yunho---“ Yoochun kept mumbling off, and was mischievously enjoying Jaejoong’s reaction.

“Fine, FINE, Yoochun-ah, geez, I’ll sing.” Jaejoong said, but not before eyeing the t.v. screen to make sure that his number wasn’t called yet. 20 more applicants to go until it was his turn, and then Yoochun was also next after him. Jaejoong looked down at the part that Yoochun highlighted, and couldn't believe his eyes.

“Yoochun-ah…you can’t be serious.” Jaejoong trailed off, staring at all the highlighted parts in horror, it was bad enough that he doesn’t sing, and now he’s forced to sing ninety percent of the song.

“Hyung, I am serious, now, please..sing?” Yoochun said, with pleading eyes, and pointed to Jaejoong’s highlighted parts. Jaejoong gave a huge sigh and gave in. He was doing this for Yoochun, he told himself, and then go back to practicing his  dance moves.

He took a deep breath and looked around to see if anyone was watching, and as usual everyone was off doing their own talent stunt. Jaejoong took a deep breath, looked at the lyrics once more and opened his mouth to sing.

Jaejoong finished singing the lines and waited for Yoochun to rap his part. But Yoochun was staring at Jaejoong, like he was in a trance or something.

“Yah, Yoochun-ah!” Jaejoong said, snapping his fingers in front of Yoochun’s face. Yoochun swatted Jaejoong’s hands away and grabbed him by the shoulders.

“Hyung, you CAN sing!” Yoochun said, pressing his fingers a bit too hard into Jaejoong’s shoulder that Jaejoong pulled away abruptly.

“Sorry, hyung, but, DAMN, you can SING!” Yoochun said, out loud and almost everybody turned around and stared at them. Jaejoong blushed with embarrassment as he covered Yoochun’s mouth yet again with his hand.

“MMFHGHHHPHH!!” Yoochun was trying to tell him that he should sing, but Jaejoong wouldn’t remove his hand from his mouth until he promised to shut up.

“Yoochun-ah, it’s not funny, I sing like a broken record..” Jaejoong said sadly, remembering what happened when he sang at one of his sisters’ birthday party and ended up get laughed at.

“BPHMFH YOUP DWONT THASD WABSH A LOBNG TIMH AEGOP(BUT YOU DON’T, THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO)” Yoochun tried to say, but Jaejoong still shook his head, stubbornly, refusing to acknowledge any of Yoochun’s words.

“The only I can do, is dance, Yoochun-ah, thanks for trying, but I’m sure Jung Yunho will be happy to see me dance, besides I have a few secret moves under my sleeves.” Jaejoong said, and winked happily at Yoochun. Yoochun was beginning to turn purple, and Jaejoong removed his hand, and wiped it on his gray vest.

Yoochun wanted to protest some more, but somehow his song paper ended up in the hands of another guy who looked quite the same age as them. He had the same hairstyle like Kangsta (former H.O.T. member), wore plain matching black shirt and pants. He had this dorky smile on his face like a little kid and out came his kiddy and squeaky voice.

“Hi, mind if I try to sing it?” He asked in a squeaky voice of his, still with a dorky smile. Yoochun and Jaejoong stared at him, wondering what he was up too. And then, out came the strangest sound they’ve ever heard come out of anyone before, “EU KYANG KYANG!”.

Yoochun nearly fell of his chair and Jaejoong’s face broke into a smile, as the kid continued to look at them with a dorky and yet confused smile on his face.

Jaejoong smiled and bowed his head, then introduced himself,” Hi, I’m Hero Jaejoong and this is my friend, Micky Yoochun, please to meet you.” Yoochun cleared his throat and bowed in respect and shook his hand.

The dorky kid smiled and introduced himself too, “Hi, I’m Xiah Junsu, nice to meet you both!” He smiled again and Jaejoong and Yoochun couldn’t help but smile back.

“I couldn't help but overhear when I heard that song that Jaejoong-shii sang, it was really beautiful.” Junsu said, with a bright smile on his face. Yoochun couldn’t help but feel overwhelmingly happy that someone other than Jaejoong loved his song.

“That’s the same reaction I had when I heard Yoochun sing it, but I think I killed it with my horrible voice.” Jaejoong said, with an embarrass look on his face, as Junsu and Yoochun both looked at each other wondered what “horrible” voice Jaejoong was talking about.

“Junsu-shi, what are you going to sing for the auditions?” Yoochun asked, happy to know that he had another fan of his art.

“I’m going to sing “Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston, my mom loves her songs, and this is one of my personal favorites.” Junsu exclaimed happily in his squeaky voice, followed by more of his “EU KYANG KYANG”.

They continued to chat with one another, finding more about Xiah Junsu and in vice-versa, Junsu learning more about Jaejoong and Yoochun. Junsu loved soccer, likes to eat food fast especially if it’s delicious, his favorite color was purple and blue, and he likes dolphins. Junsu learned that Jaejoong loves to cook and loves fashion, including a deep admiration for Yunho, and Yoochun loves to sleep, play the piano and write songs, and of course, cookies.

Jaejoong looked at the screen….10 more people to go till it was his turn.

*************************************************************************************

Yunho was getting tired by the minute; he would rather be dancing on stage than sitting here and watching people audition. So far, all the acts that he’s seen so far, wasn’t the kind of talent that he was looking for.

He was twirling his pencil around with his fingers as the girl auditioning was singing-more like screeching, a song about being heart broken  and still loving the person who hurt her. He sighed and tried to pay attention to the girl, but he ended up looking at the clock.

So all the acts were singing and most of all dancing, and a few people acting. He felt somewhat sorry for the people that were so nervous that they forgot the words to a song or forgot the dance moves to the song. Yunho smirked, he would never crack under pressure, and he’d dance his heart out, unlike some of the people who auditioned who danced like they were drunk or looked like they were high on something.

After the girl was done singing, they were given a couple of minutes to evaluate her performance.

Yunho looked at her name, Seulgi, and looked at the scorecard. Questions about her performance and then final comments about her talent, Yunho wrote down,”My ears were bleeding throughout the entire performance. She looks like nice girl, but singing is definitely not her talent, that’s for sure.” Sure, the comment was cold, but he was being honest. He signed his name on the evaluation and put it back in the folder that had her name on it.

The other judges took their time, evaluating her performance, and when they were done, placed their evaluations in her folder. Then the girl left the stage, looking satisfied, as one of the staff members was asked to get the next person to audition.

He saw one of the staff members go out to the back door of the room to call in the next person waiting in line to audition, the host patiently waited before announcing the next person.

Yunho looked up to see who the next person was, hopefully, it’ll be someone with real talent. The staff member was walking at the person’s side, so Yunho wasn’t able to get a look, until he noticed who the person was. Yunho nearly fell off his chair and his pencil ended up flying out of his fingers, and hitting one of the camera men.

It was that girl, from outside! The one who was shoved by his asshole of a manager! She had the same SKULL beanie and was wearing gray and white clothing. Weird, how most of the girls wore short skirts and how girl seemed to look good in such plain clothing. Great, what the hell was wrong with him?

She looked a little bit lost, and kind of nervous. He watched as she grabbed the microphone given by the host and looked at the judges one by one, and when she looked at Yunho, her eyes widen and then she smiled. Yunho gulped and had this strange desire to smile back, but he just continued staring at her. The girl turned back to the judges as she introduced herself.

“H..Hello, my name is Hero Jaejoong and for my talent, I’m going to…..-Jaejoong paused and forced himself to say the word---……sing”.

*************************************************************************************

“And that’s why, you never catch me betting against Changmin.” Junsu said happily as he high fived Changmin, who laughed. Yoochun laughed along with his new friends as he remembered Jaejoong’s face, [knowing Jaejoong the longest] Jaejoong had the habit of always sticking to  bets no matter how childish they were.

“Of course, Hyung, that’s a lesson learned.” Changmin said, as they continued to laugh some more. Changmin won, so now Jaejoong has no choice but to sing rather than dance.

Changmin who was a friend of Junsu came over to audition too, and happened to see his friend there. It was strange how Changmin was still wearing his school uniform and carrying a book in one hand as he approached them. For some reason, like with Junsu and Jaejoong, they connected instantly. It turns out Junsu and Yoochun were close to the same age and Changmin was the baby of the group, as Jaejoong remained the oldest of them all.

“Yoochun-ah, I don’t understand something.” Junsu said in between laughs and his tone now turning serious. Changmin and Yoochun stopped laughing and looked at Junsu’s serious face.

“Understand what?” Yoochun asked, staring at Junsu, now looking serious. Changmin looked at both of them and then at Junsu, wondering what was going on in his silly, hyung’s mind.

“Why is Jaejoong-hyung so …..afraid of singing?” Junsu asked as Changmin looked at Yoochun, who looked like he was wondering about that too.

Changmin, who always had a theory about things, answered,” Maybe it was a traumatic childhood experience?” Yoochun smiled sadly and shook his head, and then began to explain, putting the paper of his finished composed song down on his lap.

"Jaejoong was around seven or ten and he was asked to sing at his older sister’s birthday party. Being a shy and bulky kid, he cared about what others thought, and most of all he cared a lot about what his sisters thought of him. So he sang, and ended up getting tons of laughs and claps, instead of taking that as a positive response, Jaejoong thought it was bad, and ran to his room crying.” Yoochun said, as he remembered the look of Jaejoong’s teary face when people were pointing and laughing at him.

“Well he was a kid, but I’m sure he didn’t sing that bad, besides I’m sure his voice wasn’t even done maturing yet.” Junsu said quietly and had this frown on his face. Changmin nodded in agreement with Junsu as he took it in consideration, thinking of another theory.

“He took this memory to heart and has been afraid of singing ever since this is like the second time I’ve heard him sing, and he sounds amazing, but no matter how many times I tell him that, he refuses to believe me.” Yoochun said, shaking his head and putting his hands up in the air.

“So that’s why he wanted to dance-Yoochun snorted and shook his head-“but he sucks at it, but what does this have to do with Jung Yunho, Yoochun-hyung?” Changmin asked, resting his chin on his hand, thinking about the answer to his own question.

Yoochun laughed out loud, which interrupted Junsu and Changmin’s thoughts, as they each gave a Yoochun a confused and amused look.

He looked up at the clock and realized that only a few minutes passed, which meant that Jaejoong was still in the middle of his audition. Then he looked at them and smiled.

“Let’s just say that after seeing Jung Yunho perform once at a concert, Jaejoong’s whole world changed."

*************************************************************************************

His heart was thumping like crazy, but with one glance at Yunho, his heart beat calmed down a bit.

Jaejoong took a deep breath and with one glance at Yunho, he opened mouth and began to sing one of his favorite love songs, “Can I Love You?” by Yurisangja. Yoochun told him that this song must be expressed with loving emotions because it’s about someone’s deep desire to love someone, who’s been right by their side every time.

Jaejoong desperately wanted to dance, but a bet was a bet. He sighed nervously and brought the microphone close to his lips.

He closed his eyes, and began to sing the lines.

“Chut noon en nan nae sa ram in guhl a rat jyo.” (*I knew at first sight that you were mine)

He immersed himself into the lyrics, with each words sung deep within his heart. This song was the same song that was played at his older sister’s wedding, he could never forget the look on his sisters’ and her husband’s face when they danced to this song. There was so much …love.

“Waen i rin ji. nat suhl ji ga an ha yo. Sul le go it jyo.
Nae mam eul mo doo ga jyuh gan keu dae” (*I don't know why but it's not strange, But my heart is fluttering, you took all of my heart)

He then opened his eyes to sing the last words of the beautiful song and looked at all the judges, except Yunho’s. Afraid that he might forget once he stared at his admirable idol’s face.

“ji geum nae ap e an jeun sa ram eul sa rang hae do dwel gga yo? (*Can I love this person that's sitting in front of me?)

doo geun guh ri neun mam eu ro~ keu dae e ge neul jo heun guht man jool gge yo" (*I'll confess to you with my pounding heart)

Then to end it off, just like the song ends, he sang the concluding lines softly and found himself staring at Yunho as he sang it.

“Can I.. love....You?”

It was quiet for a couple of seconds and then there was a loud crash.

*************************************************************************************

“Yunho-ah!”

Kangta and the rest of staff ran to help Yunho up who ended falling off his chair and falling hard on his butt.

Yunho gently pushed the hands away as he told them that he was fine and made a stupid excuse to use the restroom. He almost crashed into to one of the camera men as he exit the door to find the restroom.

He kicked the men’s door open in annoyance for falling off his chair like an idiot and hiding in the restroom like a coward. He went to the sink and splashed water on his face, and looked at his face in the mirror, it was pink and flushed, like he had a fever or something.

He could just imagine the news headlines,”Jung Yunho, amazing solo artist, falls during one of the auditions”, he hoped they’ll edit that embarrassing scene and spare him from his manager’s annoying lectures.

“Shit!” He exclaimed as he threw more water on his face, trying to wash away the pink color from his face. What the hell was wrong with him? One minute, he was being bored and uninterested, and then when that girl-Hero-of whatever-the-hell-her-name was went on stage, his attention ended up being on her.

….and that…stupid….p- pretty smile of hers! What the heck was wrong with him? Why did he have this stupid desire to smile back at her? How could she smile at him from what happened before when his manager shoved her off him? Not to mention that he didn’t miss the red scrape on her hand when she was holding the microphone. He never did have a chance to apologize; after all it was his fault.

When she was singing and had her eyes closed, he had this strange urge to take that microphone from her hands and ……..dance with her.

He gripped the sides of the sink hard, and didn’t understand what was wrong with him. She was like every other girl he saw..She was cute…but when she sang…she looked so goddamn beautiful…

He gulped guilty and looked at his face in the mirror. He still had that weird pink flush on his face, he looked at the time on his watch, shit..he wasted 10 minutes in the bathroom, fussing over a girl.

His manager was going to kill him if he found out, he wiped his hands quickly and left the restroom, and the other weird thing that he didn’t understand was, why his heart was beating so damn hard?

*************************************************************************************

His heart rate finally slowed down.

When he stepped out of the room, he took a long and deep breath. Jaejoong felt relieved to be done with his audition, but sad that he didn’t get a chance to shake hands with Yunho.

He found it sort of weird that Yunho got up from his fall and rushed out the room, he wondered it was his fault, for singing so horribly. He frowned at that thought and walked into the waiting room, and was glomped.

“Hyung! Good job!” Yoochun said, hugging him with one arm, as Junsu hugged him from the front and Changmin shyly hugged Jaejoong from the side. Jaejoong felt happy all of a sudden and hugged his friends back.

“I guess, it’s my turn, now, wish me luck, Hyung!” Yoochun said, when the staff member who called Jaejoong, called Yoochun and his number flashing on the t.v. screen. Yoochun gave them all one last hug, with his composed song on one hand, they watched Yoochun disappear to the audition door.

“So, Jaejoong-hyung, how’d it go?” Junsu said, clapping his hands excitedly with a smile on his face, Changmin leaned in to their conversation and waited for his response.

“Well…it was okay, that is until Yunho fell.” Jaejoong said, quietly, pulling his black, skull beanie to hide his burning red ears. Junsu let out another “EU KYANG KYANG” and Changmin laughed and clapped.

“H-how is that funny? He could’ve gotten hurt!” Jaejoong exclaimed in a worried tone as Junsu and Changmin continued to laugh till tears came out of their eyes.

“Besides it’s my fault….due to my horrific singing, I’m sure his ears are probably bleeding too.” Jaejoong said, quietly as Junsu and Changmin stopped laughing and stared incredulously at Jaejoong.

“Jaejoong-hyung, I think you’re an amazing singer…and errr.....dancer as well .” Junsu said happily and placing a hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder and giving a small squeeze before letting go. Changmin joined in and placed his hand on top of Jaejoong’s.

“Jaejoong-hyung, one fall on the ground isn’t going to kill him, I think-Junsu rolled his eyes of Changmin’s new theory--- he was so into your singing that he was lost in the moment and ended up falling over.”

“Jaejoong-hyung--- Changmin continued and Jaejoong looked at him--- I think he liked you”.

Jaejoong’s eyes widen and Junsu choked on whatever he was eating, and playfully smacked Changmin on the back.

“Yah! Junsu-hyung, what was that for?” Changmin complained and began attacking Junsu back by poking his sides, Junsu, who trying finish whatever he was eating, began poking Changmin back.

Jaejoong laughed as Junsu struggled not to lose his battle with Changmin, who kept poking his hyung’s sides.

Jaejoong ignored his new friends for a minute to gather up his thoughts and thought about Changmin’s theory. Even though he just met Changmin, he wondered if Changmin’s theory was right.

*************************************************************************************

“You like that girl, Yunho?”

Yunho choked on his soda, as his manager gently pat his back. Yunho was turning red again and tried to compose himself.

“She’s good that’s all.” Yunho said quickly, drinking his soda slowly to avoid choking again. His manager gave him a weird look as Yunho turned away and continued drinking his soda. He was on break for about 20 minutes then he had to go and do his job.

“That girl has talent, Yunho, from what I heard from the other judges, she had high marks.” His manager said, pouring himself some coffee and looking through the paperwork.

Yunho didn’t answer and tried to think of something else other than Hero, but she was on his mind for a while, and when he tried to think of something else, his manager HAD to bring her up.

“By the way, they need your evaluation paper, turns out you had to take a leak that you couldn’t do it right?” His manager said, raising an eyebrow and staring at Yunho, who felt his face was turning red again. Luckily he finished his soda, otherwise, he could’ve choked again.

“That was…it was an emergency.” Yunho said, lying and showing him his bandaged hand. The manager’s eyes widened and was about to lecture him, but Yunho put his hand up.

“It was just aching, but no major blood spill.” Yunho said, lying as his manager gave a small sigh and stood up and gave the folder that had the Hero’s name on it. Damn.

“Good, now finish this evaluation and turn it in, I have another meeting to attend and some calls to make.” His manager said, as Yunho bowed out of courtesy and his manager walked out the door, closing the door behind him.

Yunho stared at the folder, on the front of it read, in red letters, “HERO JAEJOONG” # 21.

He took out the evaluation sheet, grabbed his red pen, and crossed out the questions and wrote in huge letters
