Facebook applications

Well, as if facebook applications weren't evil enough as it is, I've just noticed that some of the ones on a friend's page are trying to catch my attention *by name*. What the hell?

As far as the application's concerned, it is just outputting an FBML tag that is substituted for your name when you view the page. The app doesn't have any access to your name unless you explicitly allowed it.

I always recommend people who know how to write code and are concerned about Facebook applications to just write one themselves to see how it works - you'll be surprised at how differently they work to how you expected, and how clever the privacy measures are. Well, I was.
