That was pretty much why I thought I'd ask it... I said the first one (I think) and then realized that I considered the other two pretty valid, too. And "Of a fandom I don't know," but I only thought of that after making the poll. "In" seems to be winning consensus, though.

Trick question. The correct answer is, of course:

I read a work of fanfiction from a fandom I don't know.

(piece of is also acceptable.)

This is an excellent point! I haven't seen it referred to as such for a while, but that is probably a more proper way of saying things than "a fanfiction."

I am unsure which is correct, but I think I usually say "in a fandom I don't know." I think for sounds wrong, but I'm not sure it is.

d00d this is a hard question. I picked "for" because I normally say "I write fanfiction for Repo" or "I've never read a fic for Harry Potter". I guess in my head, I see the sentence in question as "I read a fanfiction [written] for a fandom I don't know."

I think that's how I see it as well, but it's a close one. If I weren't thinking about it I don't know if I'd really pick one over the others.
