This is probably more depressing than helpful, but I have references and a college diploma and all, and I still can't get a job.

I know a lot of people who are in your similar position, as helpful/unhelpful as that may be. I am however facing cash flow problems (like "Oh fuck doctor's bill, where the fuck is this money going to come from?"), and enjoy such pastimes as eating. :P So something has got to change.

*hug*

I'm lucky that I can stay with my mom and not go crazy, and she's charging me next to nothing for rent and food and use of the car, so between that and my savings, it's semi-okay that I'm not really scraping together enough to cover the student loans all the time. (And yes, if it gets really bad I'll put them on forbearance, but I'd really rather not do that; there are enough of them already without accruing more interest.)

I think that's one of the few blessings of this terrible economy. There are a zillion people looking for jobs -- but practically all of my friends who aren't in grad school are in the same position I am (more or less), so there's reassurance that it's not just me.

Don't guilt too much over putting someone down as a reference. A lot of retail chains and stuff don't even CALL references: the last time I was applying for jobs, like 90% of it came down to availability.

Also, if they ever ask for personal, not professional, references, and you need another name, you are welcome to put me down.

I'm hoping that my total availability during the days will balance my total unavailability on weeknights.

I... may actually take you up on that. My father pointed out that I have someone who's known me personally and professionally since I was a little kid and is apparently willing to vouch for me, so that's 50%-33% taken care of.

If you have weekends free, I think that's a pretty good selling point. Weekends are when everyone wants to NOT work.

Absolutely do ♥ Oh! Yeah, that's really good. How many references are you running into places usually asking for?
