Aforesaid friend's new interest in Velvet Goldmine lead me to re-watch the film, which lead me to the fandom, which lead me to the following observations

Your reactions to that film and fandom are exactly my reactions. GOOD TASTE, US!
Secret: I cannot watch the Brian/Curt breakup scene. I have literally skipped it every time but the first. I just want to punch Brian in the face and be all, "YOU ARE HURTING YOU, CAN'T YOU SEE THAT YOU'RE HURTING HIM, AAAAAAUGH." And that is the story of how I'm over-invested in yet another fandom, ahaha.
Brian basically destroys everyone he comes into contact with, possibly excepting Jerry and Shannon, and possibly including himself. That point really depends on one's interpretation of the 1984 segments. Mine is that he wanted the fame and the love, and he was going to get it any way he had to. *shrugs* It really gets me that most of fandom seems to view Mandy as a horrible person, when she had her life fucked up, too. Her only fault was being pretentious, and, dude, in that movie who ISN'T? (Jack Fairy, maybe).
I realise this is a month old, but any discussion of this film turns me into a small, giggling child. I've been so ridiculously overly invested in VG since I was fourteen. <3
I obviously don't spend enough time in the fandom though. My biggest issue before finding this post was how so many fics seemed to deal with Arthur becoming some sort of groupie for Curt. I mean, it's certainly possible, but I'm an optimist and tend to read the last line as 'I will stop alternately wallowing in and running from my past and instead choose to move forward' rather than 'I choose regression, woot'. Now though- do people really hate Mandy? Why? Shannon I understand, but Mandy? She was wildly ostentatious, but as you said, so was everyone involved. That's part of the attraction

WHAT. Oh, jeez, I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but c'mon, fandom.
I would read so much fic about Jack Fairy just being a huge, amazing, anti-social weirdo. :DDDDDDDDD
