Friends! Comrades! And more importantly, readers/watchers/listeners! I have a proposal. I'm looking for books/movies/fanworks/whatever based on the Sherlock Holmes, er, mythos, and Arthuriana. For Holmes, I would prefer something that kept to the spirit/setting of the original books (though I do enjoy the Mary Russel novels, so that's relative ( Read more... )

Well... I don't have much for recommendations, but I do enjoy Merlin for a bit of very, very silly play with Arthurian legend. Gwen is adorable and Morgana is a badass (though I have not seen season 2 yet).
And Sherlock Hound. :3 Clearly I lean heavily into silliness with the things I watch.

On Rosemary Sutcliff - have you read The Shield Ring?

HOOOUUUND! We were somehow able to watch that with Grand Charles in the room. My theory was that he must have been blind enough not to tell what was going on. :P

I thought I had, but Google informs me I'm getting it mixed up with the Shining Company. Which I was getting mixed up with the Lantern Bearers.
On a Sutcliff-related note, I saw in the bookstore that they're trying to market her books by putting big, muscley, tattooed, shirtless dudes on the cover.

Heehee!

I think it is the only one of hers other than her Beowulf that I have read, because Rosie gave it to me a while back. It is very good.
Haha muscly tattooed guys. XD I suppose it makes a kind of sense...?

OH MY GOD you haven't read Song for a Dark Queen? Or The Shining Company? Get thee to a library! I'm actually pretty sure you may have read Brother Dustyfeet (the one about a boy with Shakespeare's traveling company), because we lent it to your house... Anyway. Song for a Dark Queen is about Boadicea.

Tangentially, is Mars Attacks happening this weekend?

I don't know if you've read anything by Catherynne Valente, but she's excellent, and just released a sort of California-punk Arthurian retelling called Under in the Mere that's pretty fabulous. I have a copy, if you'd like to borrow it next time you see me. Also, have you read The Squire's Tale (and sequels), by Gerald Morris? It's epically delightful Arthurian YA.

Yes, by Gerald Morris. Those are excellent.

I haven't read any other good Arthuriana lately (to tell the truth, I haven't read anything lately), but if I think of any others I'll add them.

Oh hey, how about Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court? I can't speak to quality, since I only heard exerpts of it when I was very small, but Mark Twain can't be all bad.

Valente? California-punk? Excuse me while I DIE OF SQUEE over here. Shall definitely check that out, although the Internet says it's not published until December?
Speaking of lending things, do you still have my copy of Cordelia's Honor? It's fine if you do, feel free to keep it until you're finished. I just can't remember if it's with you or in a moving box.

Have you read The Mists of Avalon? I rather liked it and the surrounding books.

Oh, good call! My auntie tried to get me to read it, but I was way too young and got bored... should try again.

You should. Very good, if a bit strange in parts. How I wish I had time to read...
