"How was it?" Jairdan greeted Vera at the door and looked surprised to find there was no one following her. "Theani gone home for the night?"
Vera only nodded, walking on to her room in silence, dropping the bag with Jairdan's dinner in it on the table by the work bench.
"We picking her up again in a week?" Jairdan called from the door, locking it securely before he followed her, knowing something was up. He was always blunt about these things, knowing it was better to get it over and done with instead of tip toeing around it for days.
"Should be." Vera confirmed, slowing with a sigh as Jairdan grabbed his dinner and jogged to catch up. "Not now, Jairdan..."
"Fair enough." Jairdan met up with her. "But when you want to say, do, okay? Don't try to keep it all to yourself." he opened the bag and sniffed before shooting her a look. "What'd you get me?"
"Beef and Black Bean - and," she cut in, over his interruption, "There's extra soy packets in there."
"Thanks." Jairdan nudged her in the old way he used to, when they were children, and moved on towards the catwalk. "Tell me when you want to, okay?" he reminded over his shoulder.
"You won't want to hear it." Vera murmured, a little too loud. He wasn't supposed to hear it.
"I'd rather hear it than you act like this." Jairdan pointed out bluntly, and then offered her a smile before he disappeared up the stairs to the next level.
Vera closed the door behind her and with a sigh, leant against it and let herself slide down to the floor. How could she ever talk to him about it? She let a smile grace her lips though; it had been such a lovely night after she had finally managed to say she'd love to... and she really, really would... and... then... wow.... …Wow…
She felt like she was about to cry out loud though. Leave Jairdan and Shaelt? How could that ever go down well? She and Jairdan had been as if sewn together at the hip ever since he was born... and now she was about to tell him she was just... going to leave someday? ...Soon?
She'd replied to Theani with the affirmative before she'd even thought about it. But hours had passed since then and her answer still wasn't any different. Some nights she was simply tired of this life... it was Jairdan's dream anyhow and she never got time to paint when they were up in the air, never had the money either...
Vera sighed. She felt shaky, as if that night had already happened ages ago and she had only just woken up and remembered it all in a sudden rush. She traced her fingers over her lips, sealing the memory in, before she got to her feet and threw herself into her bed. Worrying about telling Jairdan could come later. Right then, she needed sleep.
