Jairdan hadn't joined them although they had invited him and guiltily, Vera was glad. She knew Jairdan was more than happy to stay on the ship and tinker around in silence, and probably thought it was a bonus they'd be bringing back a fresh meal to him and yet... it felt a little strange to be leaving him behind. Like she should be guilty. She shook that idea from her head though, because it was silly. Why should she feel guilty for going out without him?
"Anything on your mind?" Theani asked, rewarding Vera with a smile as the older woman shook her head.
"Just a bit over-tired, I guess." Vera shrugged it off and then pulled Theani closer against her side. "Sorry 'Ani.."
"That's okay." the tint on Theani's cheeks was some sort of supreme evil, it always instantly made Vera's thoughts disappear into thin air. "We don't have to spend long out..."
"It's nice to get off the ship though." Vera reassured, "I can last."
"I know." Theani blushed, but nudged her girlfriend, making Vera blush also and from there, they walked on in silence.
They ordered at a nice little café and were seated tucked away in a corner thanks to Theani’s request, making small talk of how the week had gone and when they could next meet up. She was distracted though, Vera noticed, which distracted her also while she tried to think about what it could be. Things had been going well between them, she thought. They got along well, even in silence and always had something to talk about if they felt chatty… they’d had a few minor tiffs throughout the months they’d been seeing each other, but it had been the healthy kind and only brought them closer together in the end. So what could be the problem?
Dinner passed quicker than Vera would have liked, and soon they were sipping Spiders (not allowed to drink, thanks to work early the next morning) and sharing a slice of lemon tart for desert. It was then that Theani cleared her throat and caught Vera’s attention, squeezing her hand tight suddenly.
"There was something I had to ask you." Theani looked somehow nervous while still calmer and more at peace than Vera had ever noticed her to be before. "You don't have to answer right away... you don't have to say anything at all... and if you said 'no' I would understand completely but... I still have to ask."
"Go on." Vera prodded, her voice surprisingly normal. Inside everything was jumping. Nothing ever good had come from those words.
"I was wondering... if you ever got ... tired from your life in the skies... whether you'd like to - well, you said once you wanted to paint more, right?... and well, I want to open a cafe or something. Would you like to join me..? If you ever... left this life?” Theani finished in no more than a whisper and hid her eyes, quite still.
