I saw The Boat That Rocked last night, and I only have one thing to say really.

BILL NIGHY IS GOD!!!

Sure it was good (even if it was could have done with a heavy edit, the characters were written too broadly and it was a smidgen misogynistic - even though it was more to reflect of the era than anything else), but in all honesty there were two ( Read more... )

I was watching the trailer for The Boat That Rocked a couple of days ago with my family, and mum asked me if I thought I was going to see it. I was hesitating until Bill Nighy flashed past. "Yes. Yes, I'm going to see it."

Bill Nighy is just that great. I hope I'll get around to see it soon.

It is worth seeing. There is a lot to like aside from Bill Nighy (even though he completely steals the movie), because it's just one of those fun movies that you can switch off your brain and enjoy for the music and laughs without it getting too sappy or emotional, despite some attempts at full-blown drama towards the end.

it was absolutely brilliant :) Great soundtrack and the cast was completely brilliant. Bill Nighy is actually awesome personified and I loved the almost complete IT-Crowd Reunion :) Nick Frost and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were nice too but I thought the ultimate win went to Emma Thompson :)

oh yeah... new SoP looks like it has fail stomped all over it, I was trying to be optimistic but after seeing that trailer for the umpteenth time I don't know. I'm making one of my friends watch the real thing with me (she was pretty easy to convince after seeing The Boat that Rocked and hearing Nighy was in it) and then come with me to watch and bitch the US version.

Ah well at least there is a little eye candy and as much as BA's rep might be tarnished he was pretty great in Dogma :)

I'm torn about seeing the SoP movie, because while I have seen some shit movies due to Bateman, they weren't remakes of one of my favourite shows ever. If I were to see it, it would be more for the snark factor than anything else.

Affleck can be alright at times, but he is just wrong as Stephen Collins. Sure, the dynamic between Cal and Stephen, along with the characters themselves, are going to have to change anyway because Crowe's Cal doesn't really look as vulnerable or as pissiliy submissive as Simm's, but I just can't see Affleck playing Stephen at all.

Watching him in the trailer was almost as riveting as watching paint dry.

You can leave out "in the trailer". I turned on "Armageddon" last night on telly just because I knew Hubs would nearly puke the first time he walked in the room (I am evil that way, yes) and was sadly reminded of this fact. BA cannot act his way out of a wet paper sack. A tree branch has more emotional range.

I think Affleck is alright in a certain type of role (the more frat-boy type of character) but he just doesn't have the ability to really portray anything else, largely in part to him having, as you so perfectly described, the emotional range of a tree branch. So, even though the character of Stephen is going to have to change anyway, just because he can't physically dominate Crowe's Cal like Morrissey could with Simm, I still have no confidence whatsoever that he'll be able to pull it off.

I've been waiting for "the boat that rocked" for weeks now. I'm not sure when it opens in the US, but I'm so glad that your review is positive. That whole cast is made of win, but Bill Nighy is the reason I'm going to see it.
Here's a link to an hour long interview with Bill and this wonderful interviewer Charlie Rose. You might enjoy it.

I'm just helping out your obsession. I'm such an enabler:)
As for SOP, it's going to be very difficult for me to be objective about it. I'm gonna try to judge it on it's own merit, but I may not succeed. Affleck may not be able to convey the prickishness and smugness that Morrissey displayed so effortlessly. Perfect for the character. And most importantly - the movie version will not have a cast that want to shag each other senseless.

You little enabler, you :P Thank you so much for the link, I'll check it soon :D

The movie isn't groundbreaking in any way, shape or form, but it is fun, which is just what you need sometimes, and Nighy completely steals it from when he first swaggers on screen in a blue suit and plum-coloured scarf. Plus I'm easily swayed in something's favour when it features awesome uses of music.

I'll try to be objective, but from the trailer it looks a standard Hollywood conspiracy thriller, which is a film genre of which I am not great fan in the first place. If I do see it in the cinema, it will be because of Bateman and for any snark potential.

And most importantly - the movie version will not have a cast that want to shag each other senseless.
*nods head in complete agreement*
