Too bad that modern social interactions are so damaged when we choose not to participate in social media. It's like no one knows how to use a phone or email any more.

I lament this more than you will ever know.

Yeah, this is why I don't use FaceBorg or any of the other sites. I'd rather spend my limited free time actually interacting with people in a meaningful (to me) way. I get that, to other folks, FB is meaningful, and I don't disrespect that. It's just not fulfilling to me.

It looks like there is no mechanism for dispute, either, which sucks. What if you've got a crazy-sounding name as your legal name? It seems like pen/stage names are another issue.

I'm not very fond of anonymity on the internet, as I've said elsewhere, though I can see that it has valid uses in some cases. I do think that G+ has gone about this in all the wrong ways, however.

I can dispute it by:

1) Uploading a copy of my driver's license showing my real name (photoshop is tempting, but blah).

2) Linking to my facebook profile showing that it's my real name. (I don't use facebook, and that's easily faked).

The form does not include any space for free-form explanation - so it's simply - give us this info and we'll decide.

I am not appealing the decision. I'm in violation of their terms of service as stated - it *is* a nickname. I'm not willing to use my real name there, and would rather not use the service than use my real name.

What's weird is that it requires the name that you use in everyday life, but doesn't allow nicknames. I actually don't know that many people who go by their given names. (I would guess that very few people who know me know my given name.)

Weird. I hope this policy changes soon.

If it doesn't change soon, it's going to kill their momentum and give diaspora a chance to be both a g+ and a facebook killer. I don't see that as a terrible thing.
