I've got a (pre-slash) story that clocks in at around 93,000 words and takes place during the boys' first year. Obviously there's nothing going on at that age, but my goal was to build a foundation of intimacy and affection between them. Sirius is already pretty much in love with Remus by the end of it; he just doesn't know it yet.

You could try "These Four Kings" by scribo. It's a work in progress but it's long enough already and it's really great. As a big fan of The Shoebox Project myself, I think you're going to like this fic very much.
