Well, I'm sure I read somewhere said that "Gin" in "Ichimaru Gin" means silver cuz he got silver hair. I can't read Japanese but I think that was right. No matter what the meaning of "Gin" is, I still think it's NOT meaningless :)
no, its not meaningless^^ but his name is written "just" in Hiragana(ギン), the Kanji for "silver"(銀) really reads gin and even though his name is written in "meaningless" Hiragana, it`s pretty clear that it's "Silver"
My own theory on this is that he doesn`t really have a name (kinda like Kenpachi) and that everyone in Rukongai simply called him "gin" because of his hair. It would actually also go well with the "market"/"town"(=Ichi; Maru is simply a popular name ending). Maybe Kubo simply wanted to show this through only giving him a Hiragana name?
PS: A famous japanese fairytale beast is the "Gin Gitsune" the silver fox^^
'Gin' is written in Hiragana? I thought it was in Kanji cuz if it was written in Kanji, everything will make sense. In Wikipedia it's written in Hiragana though.
PS: Oh really?!! Maybe Gin is a character inspired by Gin Gitsune cuz he looks like a fox too! LOLLLLLLLLl *love his foxy face* XD

I think Byakuya's name should actually be taken as a whole to give the meaning "white serene elegance"... I haven't actually read the whole thing; but I see you've taken great pains to compose this. If you want, I could help you to read through them a bit. I know a thing or two about kanji, you see... Still, gotta say Wow! for your serious dedicated efforts.
