She is not talking to him. But he is not convinced yet that her pulse does not quicken at least a tiniest tick when he is talking to her.

And so it's the seventh time in five days that he brought on the "I miss you". And his heart is certainly not used to it yet, so he has to practice more, lest it explode of unfamiliarity.

Then the skies fall, and gunfire renders all speculation futile. His instinct brings her down with him, and now he knows for a fact that her heart is racing like crazy. And all he wants is to feel her heart rate pulsate languorously, like that last time he was that close to her.

Instead, a relentlessly driving move of panic takes them to the elevators, which choose this damn moment to redefine inertia. But then it's here, and as his consciousness starts processing why his breath and blood have already settled into startling silence, he realizes he is in for the ride of a lifetime.
