I think someone's been thinking too much again.

Surely you're not surprised.

Not at all~. But you could find a better use for your time.

Doing what?

No, I don't. There are too many people in the City, and too many people with information that might be valuable to someone or technology that might be of interest.

It's not my strong suit, either. I'll let you know.

Information in that it's either notes or futuristic technologies?

Yes. There are a lot of people trying to understand the City; someone might be collecting various forms of information in an effort to do so.

There are far easier ways to do that without resorting to breaking and entering.

Did you get a sample of the pink material?

You would think so...

I did. I have no idea what it is, though. Its chemical composition doesn't match anything in the laboratory's records.

Quantum theory? I've done some work back in my world on subspace theory as relating to portal and portal stability. But I just got here last night, so I'm not familiar with the City at all. So far I haven't seen anything that doesn't have to abide by the rule of physics, though- I think we'd notice that one pretty quick, because the timeflow would probably be all wonky and hard for us to process. But who knows? This is a whole new world for me.

Believe me, though, I'm definitely going to be looking into this. Once I'm all a little more used to it, maybe.

I should probably have told you who I was before I started typing up a storm, huh? My name's Fred. What got you wondering about quantum mechanics?

Time doesn't always work the way it should here. I don't know enough about physics to know why... maybe you'll understand what's going on after you've been here for a few days.

Nice to meet you, Fred. I'm Justin.

I want to know how the City works. I read about quantum mechanics at home, and I'm not sure anyone has tried applying those ideas to the workings of the City. I wish I knew more.

Hi, Justin! Well, if there's anything people can count on me for, it's to apply quantum mechanics to things. Sometimes it doesn't really apply, but in this case I can see it's sorely needed, and that's rather new feeling for many theoretical physicist, I gather.

I did gather that people are brought in from different points on their timeline, which just seems to point me towards a few specific kinds of warping when the portals are opened. Now that would take some precision control, but it's sounding like someone has that. I meant time would be more- like it was constantly looping, or moving at a rate we couldn't comprehend. If the laws of physics didn't apply here, we essentially wouldn't be able to have this conversation, because it'd be completely nonlinear. If that makes any sense.

You'll have your work cut out for you here. Soon everyone who wants to go home will be asking you how portals in and out of the City work.

There's something powerful running the City. It's not the deities--the 'higher powers' that inflict the curses. There's something more powerful than them, and I imagine it's capable of anything. And that does make sense. Time isn't always perfectly linear here, though. Some of the curses seem to distort it.

Pointless. The City doesn't abide by science at all. From what I've read and heard from other people during curses there's nothing physically wrong with anyone. So science can't explain that.

What specifically with the quantum theory to you wonder about with the City?

It might be pointless.

I don't know. I read about Einstein's Theory of Relativity and its allowance for the presence of wormholes and speculation about string theory at home and I wonder if any of it might be applicable. I don't know very much about any of it. High school physics didn't cover alternate dimensions and wormholes.

I think we shouldn't stop trying to use science to figure things out, maybe someday somebody will. But I think expecting to definitely solve something here with it is pointless.

You mean like maybe we're in some sort of fourth dimension that's separated us from time and the rest of reality? Most of what I know about alternate dimensions I've learned from experience and can say that some of the theories are true.

I doubt we'll solve anything if the deities don't want us to.

Yes... or a fifth dimension, or something else entirely. Do you think it's likely?
