And "were you buried in a hole for a very long time?" is a savvy and productive opening for a discussion about Pynchon? Have you found calling random strangers uncultured to be an effective strategy for winning friends and influencing people thus far, or are you just rude?
Re: Never mind the metal.........contrasomaJanuary 24 2006, 20:35:47 UTC
And yet anyone who hasn't yet read is has been "buried in a hole for a very long time"? You've obviously got a beef with me reading Pynchon right now for some reason, but what beef? That the book sucks, or that I haven't read it yet?
Re: Never mind the metal.........marymagdaleneJanuary 25 2006, 08:42:26 UTC
i am saying it's SOOOOOOOOOOO cool that EVVVVVVVVERYONE has read the piece of shit. but it was cool like two minutes ago. i was just saying you're stupid because you are reading two minutes ago material. but then again you sound like a prick, so i really don't care! ciao!!
Re: Never mind the metal.........contrasomaJanuary 25 2006, 10:36:11 UTC
It was cool thirty three years ago, but who's counting. Was it really worth being a jerk to someone just doing catch-up "how are you?" stuff to make that point? Do you see me giving you shit for having Plath or Blake in yr interests because "you are reading forty/two hundred years ago material"?
Re: Never mind the metal.........contrasomaJanuary 26 2006, 00:03:38 UTC
Actually, I like Plath and Blake, too. I base my taste in lit on the material's depth and value, not if and when it was ever a passing phase. If there was a resurgence in Pynchon interest a few years back, the style police didn't notify me.

Guess so. In the future, please inform me of all trendy lit fads so I can appear hip while trying to impress you and yr friends at snobby cocktail parties ("what do you like of Dave Eggers' most recent work?").
Re: Never mind the metal.........dr_ewJanuary 26 2006, 02:03:01 UTC
dude. this is awesome. you got in a flame war about the hip-ness of GR. perhaps we should start a dynamic list of the book of the moment to avoid future faux-pas. or we could always just ask the super-cool kids at the hipster book club to lend an authoritative hand to the argument.
why do you always have to be such a lame latecomer - it's a fucking embarrassment.
Re: Never mind the metal.........dr_ewJanuary 26 2006, 02:06:52 UTC
of course if either of you knew anything at all you'd know that trolling LJs for the opportunity to start flame-wars about literature won't be cool for another 39 hours.

$50 sez "Kafka On The Shore" (which I actually do wanna read) gets the current nod. I only read "South Of The Border, West Of The Sun" a few months ago. The shame, the shame...
I get stressed out about statements of intent to begin with - U of A looked as though they wanted an existential justification of self. :\
...And I specifically went on this tangent when I did so that when McSweeny types start gatecrashing and getting rowdy, I can be cool and point out that I've already left that whole scene behind.
