Overslept and Star Trek discussion

Nov 19, 2008 10:45

I am made of Fail today - well this morning I was made of Fail. I didn't even hear my alarm go off nor do I remember it doing so at all. I am pretty certain I set it last night too. I rolled over and opened my eyes and saw that the clock said something like 6:33am. I was supposed to be leaving in about ten minutes ( Read more... )

Do you see what I mean by that? I just don't want the entire universe this film is based on to be completely forgotten because of how changed this film will possibly make it.

It won't be forgotten no matter how many younger people like the new version first. It may annoy you to no end, but that's not the point. The point is that pulling the younger/new people into the verse will put MONEY into it, thereby making it possible for us geezers who are fans of the real thing to enjoy years and years of Star Trek. It's worth it, in my opinion.

Oh, but it WILL be by all of those new not really Trek fans if my concerns actually happen. The new spiffy fans will think the old Trek stuff isn't worth watching even though what they've just seen should be is thoroughly based on all of it.

It's the Star Wars Prequel Syndrome as I said.

And it shouldn't annoy the other Trek fans to no end. It just shouldn't. There is a happy medium of course. I'm just hoping that they hit it.

But whether the new fans forget or not doesn't really affect the old true fans. Who cares if they like the new stuff better? We did precisely the same thing with TNG vs. TOS. We may have some appreciation for TOS now that we're older and not so stupid, but just think of how we hated it when TNG was first out and awesome? Hmmm? So, we're guilty of the same thing. And it annoyed the TOS fans to no end, but honestly, it got them more Star Trek. Which is all I care about.

BUT most TOS fans also enjoyed TNG as well. It kept enough of the feel of the old series to keep the old fans interested. In fact the old fans that continued to be fans for twenty some odd years after the old series ended were ecstatic that Roddenberry was making a new show because the majority of those fans became fans after the fact. Like what happened with Firefly.

And I never said I hated TOS. I just think it's funny just like everything made in the 60s.

I have many of the same concerns as well. If they come up with a Kirk that doesn't make me want to kick him in the behind so hard he can give me a pedicure with his teeth, then I will consider it successful.

So, I guess I'm setting the bar pretty darned low. ;)

LOL! Well if Kirk makes me want to kick him in the behind then I would guess that they're doing things right. He's always bugged me because there's always been that "I'm better than you" thing he has.

From the trailer, it seems that Kirk and Spock square off, which Spock seems to win by pure awesomeness. So, I have doubts, but it seems JJ didn't do horribly (he saved the basic structure of the 1701, just made it shinier).

LOL I probably looked like it yesterday but for some reason I think that if I'd been high I would have felt a little better.

argh clocks! Sneaky little buggers they can be.

Very interesting thoughts on the new Trek movie indeed. And I think you hit the nail on the head with it. My problem all along has been that they're (to borrow your word) "reinventing" it but I think if they wanted to do that, they should do it with an all new cast/plot. I would be much more for it if it were an all new crew/ship. And I also agree that people who will watch it who weren't fans before will pass off all the other Trek stuff as lame and old (it happened with Star Wars just like you said) and while I'm sure they won't so much care about that because it'll be bring in the $$$, it's sad that these other great shows/movies are going to get sidelined by a lot of people because of it. idk. I'm still on the fence about it all. I just hope the movie allows me to make up my mind when I see it, I still don't want to be indecisive about it even after seeing it.

I don't think we'll have any trouble making up our minds about it once we see it. I just hope I'm not irritated by it because even making it better shouldn't have to irritate the fans. Well, at least not the too picky fans. :P
