I was all of twelve when the first part of this came out. I remember reading it over and over until I finally figured out that Carl was really Harvey Dent. Then I turned to the lettercol where the teaser for the next issue promised the return of Two-Face.
I wish I'd been able to read the second part when it came out so I could give you my impression of the story at the time. I don't remember feeling that it was unnecessarily convoluted, but I was used to reading comics uncritically. I was just happy to get them at all. And you have to remember that comics were still being written for kids. This would have been a rather sophisticated story at the time.
I actually have this comic, and I agree with Sara, for the time this kind of storytelling was pretty innovative, if not totally successful.
I still think it's the best pre-Eye of the Beholder Two-Face story. I also love the statue of justice in the final panel, showing how there may be hope for redemption, no matter what crimes Two-Face has committed. Sledgehammer symbolism, but comics are a visual medium, so it works.
Y'know, I'm actually pleased to see people liking this one. Maybe I underrated it, because I certainly like the story it's telling (even some of the sillier elements), even if I thought the execution wasn't expertly handled.
I'd love to see this story collected in a second Batman VS Two-Face trade paperback, along with Eye of the Beholder.
