Don't know how much this will help, but i would recommend checking out a movie called "If these Walls Could Talk" ((http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116607/))

It explorers several different stories of abortion through the different era's starting in the 50's and going up through to the 90's. Its an excellent movie, if a little hard to watch at times, the only problem is that it might be a little hard to find, but if you know the right places to look its fairly easy to find a torrent.

Thanks! I totally agree: I think women sometimes choose to have herbal abortions because these "natural" practices allow a level of self-denial that in-clinic abortions do not.

I'm also wondering if women seek out herbal abortions for other reasons. Are in-clinic abortions too expensive for some women? Do parental-consent requirements drive minors to self-abort? Do women in some populations in the US possess a cultural distrust of doctors and clinics?

Any information that anyone has (including personal stories or stories about friends) would be so appreciated :)

I attempted to "self-abort" when I was pregnant several years ago by using herbs (very high doses of vitamin C, black cohosh, a couple of other things), but it didn't work. I did it for one of the reasons you listed- I was 16 years old in Texas and did not want to tell my parents. I wound up telling them after trying several different things to avoid doing so (including trying to run away to a different state, talking to a lawyer about getting a judicial bypass, and using all sort of self-destructive behaviors to induce a miscarriage). If you have more questions about my experience I would be happy to talk to try to answer them.

Hi worldstandstill,

I would absolutely love to talk to you a bit more about your experience. My email is kadrama@comcast.net. Feel free to email me whenever; I have just a few more questions about how you learned about these herbs, what you would advise for a woman in a similar situation, etc.

Thank you so much. You have no idea how helpful feedback like this is.

I think for some women a herbal abortion might seem tempting not because they are trying to deny the abortion to themselves but that they are hoping to hide it from everybody else. For many women, especially those living with their families it can be difficult to go to clinics without attracting notice. I considered self-aborting because I had no idea how to go about obtaining a clinical one and was so embarrassed and scared of going to the doctor about it. I hoped I could just go to the supermarket or chemist (I even briefly considered picking rue in the botanical gardens!). When I tried researching it further though I realised that it would be very dangerous and quite possibly ineffectual.

I just want to thank you all SO much for responding to my questions. Not only is it generous for you to share your information and experiences, it's also pretty damn brave. Despite the statistics (35% of US women will have had an abortion by the time they reach 45 years old) our culture discourages conversations about abortion and reproductive health. Communities like this one are so important ( ... )
