I just discovered that I'm pregnant, and I want to get an abortion. I've been doing research online, and I think the abortion pill would be my best option. I'm just worried about cost, i know insurance won't cover it and at the moment i just have enough to pay my bills. can anyone give me an estimate on how much i'd have to pay for this ( Read more... )

by "the abortion pill", i'm guessing you mean having a medical abortion? it's actualy a combination of shots and suppositories, i believe.. it induces miscarriage. how far along are you? medical abortions can only be performed early on in the procedure.

there is a LOT of information over at http://www.plannedparenthood.org under health, then abortion, so you can get a better idea of your options and the procedures. it should run about $350, i believe.

it's actualy a combination of shots and suppositories, i believe..

Methotrexate is a shot, but now that RU-486 is approved, that's what is generally used (in the U.S.) for medication abortion. It's more reliable than methotrexate (though methotrexate is very reliable as well). RU-486 is in fact a pill.

The suppositories are actually pills as well (misoprostol) and can be taken orally, but are usually inserted into the vagina because they work best that way.

thanks - that's kind of why i suggested looking up the details on PP's site.. i knew it wasn't just one oral pill, but i knew i didn't have the completely details either.

I'm in texas and there is place here where the medical and surgical both cost 400 dollars. I believe the medical can only be done up to above 64 days or so if that is the way you want to go I suggest you get it done as soon as possible. the earlier the better. I wanted that and waited to long and ended having to do the surgical and that is not the best feeling in the world. The medical gives you really bad cramps and its alot better to deal with than the surgical.

Medication abortion usually costs about the same as a surgical abortion (sometimes a tiny bit more). The reason both methods cost about the same is that the main costs with both methods of abortion are the same (doctor time, because lawmakers do not allow nurses to administer RU-486; tests, ultrasounds, insurance, and of course all the state-mandated waiting period info sessions).

First-tri abortion generally costs between $300 and $450.
