LiveJournal and email accounts

Some discussion on this issue has been going around, and I want to leave my own two-cents.

An important part of keeping your LiveJournal account secure is to keep your email accounts secure. That means things like choosing strong passwords (mix of letters and numbers and characters) and making sure that you use secure connections when checking ( Read more... )

You do need to be slightly careful of using characters other than numbers and letters in passwords. My bank, without bothering to tell me, changed from accepting other characters to not accepting them which meant I suddenly found myself locked out of my accounts and had to get all the passwords reset which took several days. This makes me very cross as you can imagine because the new character-free passwords are now not so secure.

Some banks just don't have a clue - I refused to take out an account with one because the security system relied on things like a 'memorable date' and then wouldn't accept any date before 1970 (and we all know why they chose that cut off) - which meant the options were so few that anyone with half an ounce of common sense could guess them.

ETA: Thanks for the heads-up about the email management page, I didn't know about that.

Well, I think you should always go more secure rather than less, even if it might end up meaning that you get screwed when a company forces you to change to alphanumeric (or alpha) or to use less characters. Although it's good to be aware: like how some banks let you use 4+ digit PINs but some bank machines force you to use exactly 4 digits. *sigh*

I've been meaning to point out how to manage your email addresses for a while, since I see so many requests from people who never updated their accounts, but now seemed like a particularly good time.

I have a few other LiveJournal tips and tricks on my to-post list.

I'm sure we've talked about this before, but this: Since you can't currently remove the email account you used to register with the site

...is very confusing to me. How do I find out which email address I registered my account with (if by 'registered' you mean 'created', which I think you do maybe)? For me, I know it is not the same one that I currently use, but I cannot see the original one listed anywhere in my profile settings? (am I confusing the issue?)
