LiveJournal and email accounts

Some discussion on this issue has been going around, and I want to leave my own two-cents.

An important part of keeping your LiveJournal account secure is to keep your email accounts secure. That means things like choosing strong passwords (mix of letters and numbers and characters) and making sure that you use secure connections when checking email (like using https://www.gmail.com) and not sharing those passwords/accounts with other people.

I definitely recommend using email accounts that are not recycled. What that means is that hotmail isn't a good idea, because if you don't use it for x days, your email address becomes available to anyone else who wants to register it. That person can then request passwords and password resets from any other site you use.

Always make sure that your LiveJournal Account is only associated with email accounts you use and is associated with at least one account that you use. Since you can't currently remove the email account you used to register with the site, make sure that (1) you're still using that email address, and it's secure or (2) you're not using that email address but your ISP/school/work/whatever won't give that email address to anyone else. Check the E-mail Management page (linked from the FAQs below) and make sure that all other email accounts have either been deleted from that page or are secure.

How do I choose a secure password and keep my account secure?
What should I do if someone breaks into my LiveJournal account?

I am not a big fan of using secret questions to recover passwords, but if you feel the need to use one, please make sure you read What is a secret question and how do I use it?. But I very much recommend avoiding them. Choose an insecure secret question, and you're just opening yourself up to another avenue for your account to be compromised. (This is how Sarah Palin's yahoo account was hacked.)
